As you may know, we are opening an apartment complex called the Dr. Maya Angelou Village. It is in the greater Brightmoor area which also has the Eliza Howell Park and Rouge River. This area is also home to a lot of nonprofits that truly showcase the power of grassroots organizations. The Brightmoor Artisan Collective and Sidewalk Detroit have been two organizations that have been very welcoming to us, and have really helped us with getting acclimated into this community. Attending this event and providing volunteers for it helps us maintain and support the organizations that have been supporting us.
Activities will include wading into the river to pull out trash (waders provided; interested adult participants only), carrying the trash to the road, cleaning select materials in preparation for the art installation, cleaning and clearing the nature trail, and a citizen science opportunity where participants will help identify plants using inatrualist.com.
This also supports AFG’s mission with obtaining housing stability for our participants and with getting our future residence welcomed into this neighborhood. It showcases what kind of neighbors we want to be in this community. It’ll help us introduce AFG to community members that may have not met or heard of AFG before and it ensures that the community members and organizations within the community see us as neighbors of the Brightmoor community not just stakeholders.
