About Us: The Center for Educational Outreach (CEO) is a University initiative that seeks to improve educational opportunities and support academic excellence for the K-12 population in the state of Michigan, particularly those students that are low-income, first-generation, and/or have been traditionally underrepresented in higher education. Job Description: We are seeking undergraduate students to serve as Student Leaders to assist with the planning and implementation of our outreach programs. This academic year our outreach programs include College Corps, Future U, Maximizing Academic Success (M.A.S), Project Inspire, Real on College Theatre Troupe, and Ready Set Go Blue!
Student Leaders work alongside our Outreach Coordinators and Graduate Student Interns to promote college access and educational attainment through our outreach programs. Most of our programs occur in schools across the state, transportation is provided by CEO. Our outreach programs are very diverse so Student Leaders engage in a number of activities including: teaching college access and preparedness curriculum, facilitating classroom discussions and activities, monitoring students, planning program curriculum and activities, building relationships with youth, and sharing their own personal experiences in college.
A successful candidate will have strong communication and leadership skills. Candidates must be capable of serving as a positive role model for youth, promoting a college-going culture, upholding a positive attitude, communicating well with colleagues and program coordinators, exercising initiative, and managing tasks with excellent attention to detail, in a timely and professional manner. Additionally, candidates must possess ability to interact and engage with a diverse group of students and be conscious of the needs of underrepresented students.
Characteristics Duties & Responsibilities
Responsibilities for Student Leaders include but are not limited to:
- Attending scheduled meetings and required trainings
- Assisting the Outreach Coordinator with planning, leading, and implementing program activities,workshops and events
- Facilitating lesson and/or workshop delivery
- Serving as a positive role model for youth
- Participating enthusiastically in all program activities and events and encourage youth participation
- Engaging in teamwork and collaboration with the Outreach Coordinator and other Student Leaders for the duration of the prograg
- Ensuring the general safety and development, growth, and skill achievement of the youth participants
- Notifying the Outreach Coordinator of participant problems or concerns
- Knowing, enforcing, and following all safety guidelines associated with the program. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for participant safety and their whereabouts at all times
- Performing other duties as assigned
Employment Qualifications:
- Must have work-study
- Must be an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at the University of Michigan
- Experience with youth outreach programs preferred but not required
- Knowledge and interest in issues relating to higher education access and success for underrepresented students
- Ability to set priorities; handle multiple assignments and deadlines
- Ability to operate in a flexible and professional manner
- Excellent written, verbal, communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team
- Experience with Microsoft Office, specifically with Word, Excel, and Power Point
