Program Purpose: The holiday meals on wheels program operates each year on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. The purpose is to ensure homebound seniors who would normally receive meals on wheels and/or congregate meals would still have a meal on a day the regular program would not operate.  This opportunity is suitable for families so children are more than welcome to participate!

 

Experience: No experience is necessary  

 

Requirements: Valid Michigan Drivers License and properly insured vehicle. All volunteers must submit a volunteer application and background check form prior to meal delivery. Volunteers who are driving must be at least 18 years or older.

 

General Volunteer Description: Deliver holiday meals to homebound seniors.

 

Physical Requirements: Lifting no more than five pounds. Ability to walk on uneven surfaces including sidewalks. Ability to walk up and down stairs at a clients single family home and/or in apartment complexes in situations where an elevator may not be accessible.

 

Duties:

  • Deliver holiday meals to homebound seniors throughout the 34 communities in southern and western Wayne county
  • Deliver meals after pickup so the items stay fresh when they arrive to the homebound senior
  • Count your meals and double check the route prior to leaving the meal pickup site to confirm you have received the correct number of meals
  • Ensure client receives both a hot and cold meal
  • Deliver meals in a friendly, kind, and professional manner
  • Meals are handed directly to the client and volunteers should not enter the home
    • In cases where a public health crisis is determined there may be sudden program changes which may include but not limited to contact free delivery
