Description

MADD Michigan is looking to build our Peer Support Program. A program dedicated to serving Victims and Survivors by Victims and Survivors. Life is forever changed after an impaired driving crash. Victims/survivors are often left bereaved, injured and financially devastated. With the emotional, financial and legal issues they face on a daily basis, victims/survivors need support to confront the challenges that lie ahead. Volunteer peer supporters are responsible for providing direct victim services to victims/survivors of impaired driving by way of one-on-one interaction. Volunteer peer supporters do not conduct therapy or counseling. Rather, they provide a unique partnership to effectively cope with the stressors associated with bereavement issues and/or injury trauma.

Benefits:

  • Opportunities for future Victim Assistance Training via VATIs, workshops, teleconferencing, and online courses
  • Provide essential victim services to those in need, whom without MADD may never receive the support they so desperately require
  • Help others in a way that inspires hope
  • Ability to withdraw from the program at any time, though we ask if you can commit to a year
  • All Volunteer Hours can be done from the comfort of your Home

Tasks/Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Victim Services Staff to identify a likely partnership that will benefit both peers mutually.
  • Attend Trainings required for Peer Support Volunteers (Most are Online)
  •  Be considerate of individual rights, privacy, and the limits on the role of the peer supporter.
  • Be sensitive to individual, social and cultural characteristics of both peers.
  • Maintain communications with a fellow peer on a mutually established basis; weekly or bi-weekly
  • Other duties as requested

Time Commitment Required:

  • 2-6 hours per month

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Background check
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Sensitivity to the needs of victims/survivors of impaired driving
  • Ethical behavior and respect for confidentiality
  • Cannot have received an DUI/OWI
  • A Peer Supporter should have a connection to Impaired Driving: Either having had a loved one been injured or killed, or themself has been injured.
