Who We Are

Mission: To build healthy, safe and inclusive supportive housing communities as a long-term solution to homelessness.

Avalon Housing is a nonprofit real estate developer, property manager and services provider. Since our founding in 1992, thousands of individuals have achieved stability and improved their lives with Avalon Housing. In that time, Avalon has consistently grown and gained expertise in engaging and housing people with high needs who are experiencing homelessness. Our model of supportive housing is now recognized as a national best practice.

At Avalon, we believe that housing is a basic human right. Our belief in ‘housing first’ guides us in fulfilling our mission. We help our community’s most vulnerable citizens find housing without preconditions. Then we provide them essential supports to help them stay in their homes. Permanently affordable housing. A community to belong to. One-on-one services grounded in compassion, dignity and a radical acceptance of all. With these supports, we can end homelessness in Washtenaw County.

What We Do

Since our founding, Avalon Housing has been Washtenaw County’s leading provider of affordable, long-term housing with built-in care and support for our neighbors who need it. This approach, known as supportive housing, is widely considered the best long-term solution to homelessness. Supportive housing prioritizes the health and well-being of every tenant by providing resources to help them stay—and thrive—in their homes.

Avalon Housing develops and manages properties throughout Washtenaw County. We also partner with private landlords and the Ann Arbor Housing Commission to provide housing solutions for our clients. Through the support of donors and community partners, Avalon Housing tenants and clients can choose from a wide range of one-on-one supportive services like case management, 24/7 on-call crisis response, primary medical care, financial advice, and so much more.

Avalon Housing’s inclusive communities reduce isolation, increase involvement and foster hope. Through our resource centers and programs, our tenants and clients make connections that improve their quality of life and create new possibilities for all of Washtenaw County.

  • Community Resource Centers – We operate community centers that offer tenants access to computers, copiers, laundry, workshops, support groups, activities, meals & celebrations.
  • Food Pantries – We operate weekly food pantries, where tenants, volunteers and staff come together to distribute food at our community centers.
  • Community Gardens – Alongside our tenants and staff, volunteers create low-maintenance gardens with native plants that beautify our properties and attract birds, bees and butterflies.
  • VOCAL (Voices of Community Advocates and Leaders) – VOCAL helps our tenants develop leadership and community-building skills, including outreach, advocacy, event planning and storytelling. Participants can go on to hold leadership positions within Avalon Housing or other organizations.
