Our mission is to build healthy, safe and inclusive supportive housing communities as a long-term solution to homelessness.

Avalon Housing is a nonprofit real estate developer, property manager and services provider. We own and manage 282 rental units in over 20 properties in Washtenaw County.  We provide support services to our tenants and to individuals and families living in public housing and in units owned by private landlords.  In total we serve more than 750 people, including 200 children.

What We Do

Avalon Housing first opened its doors in 1992 with the purchase of one house on West William Street. Avalon was able to help six people struggling with homelessness in Washtenaw County start a new life with housing they could afford and with the support they would need to maintain it. Carole McCabe, our current Executive Director, was part of a small group of people working at the emergency shelter who had a vision for Avalon.

"We watched people get into an apartment, then end up back at the shelter again. We knew that ending homelessness would require a more creative approach and a more long-term solution. Avalon Housing grew out of this experience, and into what is now more widely known as Supportive Housing."
