What We Do

The Washtenaw County Health Department is a local governmental entity that has the legal responsibility to assure the public’s health. The mission of the WCHD is to assure, in partnership with the community, the conditions necessary for people to live healthy lives through prevention and protection programs. WCHD engages in a variety of different risk surveillance, prevention, and health promotion activities. In the 75+ years that the WCHD has been in operation, the WCHD has developed sexual health, healthy eating, and substance abuse programs; established an environmental health division to ensure access to safe food, air, and water; and worked continuously to monitor the health status of the community in addition to promoting health and safety for all county residents.
