Who We Are

Mission: To help Southwest Detroit’s environment and economy by addressing issues like air quality, blight, and land use through community partnerships.

Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision (SDEV) was founded in 1991 as a two-year project aimed at guiding dialogue between the community and local businesses. This resulted in a community plan addressing environmental concerns, including abandoned buildings, air quality, contaminated sites, and land use.

DEV became a nonprofit in 1992 and has since been a leader in improving Southwest Detroit’s environment and economy. The organization works closely with residents, community groups, government agencies, and businesses to eliminate pollution and promote a healthier community.

What We Do

Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision (SDEV) fulfills its mission having efforts that involve the community by looking at environmental issues.

  1. Community Partnership
  2. Programs & Initiatives: Through programs like the Clean Diesel Program, Idle Reduction in Schools, and the Southwest Detroit Chargeway, SDEV reduces environmental pollution.
  3. Policy Advocacy: SDEV advocates for policies like the City of Detroit Truck Route Ordinance.
  4. Community Engagement: SDEV promotes leadership and community voice by  involving local residents.
  5. Education & Awareness: Through campaigns like STOPYOURENGINESDETROIT,  they help the public learn on the importance of reducing engine idling and other things to protect the environment.

These all help to improve air quality, reduce pollution impacts and create a good environment for Southwest Detroit.
