DominicanLiteracyCenter

In August, 1989, the Dominican Literacy Center first opened its doors. The beginning held risk and uncertainty, as staff members canvassed the Detroit east side area with flyers announcing the official opening of the Center.
The site began with three staff members and five tutors. However, by mid-September 1989, the increase in student requests was so great that additional tutors/volunteers were quickly sought from the community at large.
Flash forward to 2019, you’ll find that we are a staff of 10, with over 500 students, 250 volunteers, and a multitude of individuals that contribute to making the Dominican Literacy Center the thriving success that it is today!
The purpose of this adult basic education program is to provide a tutoring service and conductive learning environment which will help adults improve their skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, mathematics, and basic computer. Respectful of the dignity of each person it will offer the learners educational opportunities, which will prepare them to successfully live out their role as parent, worker, and/or citizen. Intent upon its mission and centered in the spirit of peace , justice, joy, and hospitality, this collaborative effort is a reflection of the Adrian Dominican Sisters' continued commitment to education, which has been and remains a part of the Dominican heritage.
