Who We Are
hEARt Listens is an Ann Arbor-based nonprofit that works to promote positive mental health through peer support. hEARt was founded by University of Michigan students who saw a gap in the mental health services available to Michigan students. They wanted to ensure that every student had access to an empathetic ear when they needed one. To that end, they developed a mental health support text line for U-M students: the hEARt Line.
What We Do
The Michigan hEARt Listens chapter trains hEARt Supporters, operate the hEARt Line, and overall promotes positive mental health through peer support.
About the UM hEARt Line
Students text the hEARt Line at 734-292-8006, and within 24 hours, we connect them with a student peer supporter who has been trained in empathetic listening skills. The Line is free, anonymous, and available to all U-M students. We launched in February 2020, and have had over 30 successful conversations since then.
Why hEARt
We designed this offering to be a "front-line defense". With hEARt, students can find a listening ear, and receive guidance as to which resource on campus they can go to for more help. Our hEARt Supporters, who operate the line, are current students who have been trained in skills like active listening, smart referral, and crisis management. Our 10-week Supporter training program was developed in Winter 2019, and has been reviewed & approved by both U-M School of Social Work professors as well as a U-M Education Librarian.
