Who We Are
Mission: To provide mental health education, advocacy, and support for people who live with a mental health condition and their loved ones.
NAMI Washtenaw County is a local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization. Since our founding in 1984, we have been dedicated to supporting, educating, and advocating for individuals and families affected by mental health conditions.
What began as a small group of concerned parents has grown into a thriving organization serving Ann Arbor, Chelsea, Dexter, Milan, Saline, Ypsilanti, and surrounding communities. We provide free support groups, educational programs, and advocacy efforts to improve mental health care, reduce stigma, and promote well-being for all.
At NAMI Washtenaw, we believe that mental health care should be accessible, inclusive, and compassionate. Through the dedication of our volunteers, members, and partners, we work to ensure that no one faces their mental health journey alone.
What We Do
At NAMI Washtenaw County, we are committed to helping individuals and families navigate mental health challenges through education, support, and advocacy.
- We Educate: Our free classes and workshops—including Peer-to-Peer, Family-to-Family, and Ending the Silence—offer vital information to individuals, families, and educators.
- We Support: Our peer-led support groups create a safe space for individuals and families affected by mental health conditions to share experiences and find community.
- We Advocate: We work to improve mental health care systems, fight stigma, and push for policy changes that benefit those living with mental health conditions.
- We Listen: Through our Hospital Outreach Program and community events, we connect people with local resources and provide encouragement on the road to recovery.
From working in schools, hospitals, workplaces, and the criminal justice system to breaking down barriers to care, NAMI Washtenaw is here to make a difference. Join us in creating a world where mental health is treated with the same urgency and compassion as physical health.
NAMI Volunteers are out in the community not only to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need, but to help and support themselves as well.
Volunteering improves mental health by boosting mood, reducing stress, fostering social connections, and providing a sense of purpose and accomplishment.
