Volunteer: Card and Personal Care Pantry Donations

We welcome any quantity of non-religious cards or placemats with messages of encouragement/thinking of you, with examples below. We appreciate if cards come without envelopes and are unsigned (we add a note that they are from a caring community member). Once received, they will be sent out to clients with their meal deliveries.

Due to the diversity of our clientele, Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels typically steers away from phrases such as "I love you, you are loved, hugs, kisses, etc." on cards/placemats. Sentiments of kindness, care, positive humor, and joy are welcomed and appreciated!

Example sentiments:

Have a nice day!

May your day be filled with joy.

Sending you warm and caring wishes.

Hope you have a wonderful day!

Your community cares about you!

Volunteer: Host a Food/Personal Care Drive for Hope Clinic!

Food drives are a great way to engage your group and support food-insecure neighbors. At Hope Clinic, our choice-based pantry lets clients select the items for themselves—promoting dignity and empowering them to make decisions based on their needs and tastes.

We accept unexpired, shelf-stable items, including:

Canned goods (soup, veggies, fruit, meat) Dry goods (cereal, pasta, baking mixes, snacks) Condiments (nut butters, spices, sauces) Non-food items (hygiene products, paper goods, diapers, cleaning supplies)

We encourage donations of the same quality you'd buy for your own family—brand-name or organic items show our clients we believe they should get the very best.

For ideas and more information, visit our website https://thehopeclinic.org/projects/2020/11/12/how-to-host-a-food-drive

Volunteer: Raise a Puppy

Raise a puppy that can change two lives, yours and someone who is blind!

Puppy raisers take a puppy into their home and raise it for a specific period of time. While in the home, with the guidance of Leader Dog staff and specially trained volunteers, you will be training the puppy in basic house manners, commands and exposing it to new environments in a safe manner. Once the raising period is over, the puppy returns to Leader Dog to start its formal guide dog training.

Puppy Raising Options

Since no two households are alike, we’ve created multiple puppy-raising opportunities to fit different lifestyles. Which option is right for you?

One Household

It’s the traditional way to puppy-raise and perfect for families, college students, active
singles, retired couples and empty nesters. Usually, the puppy is picked up at 8 weeks and is raised in the home for 12-14 months.

Co-Raising (Primary and Secondary Raiser)

This option is for someone who wants to share duties with a person from another household.

The primary and secondary raisers work together to schedule who the puppy is with and when Ideal for people who are close by and can share the responsibilities during the year

Pass-Along

One raiser has the puppy for the first six months, and a second raiser has the puppy for the next six months.

Ideal for people who can commit only to a limited time raising a puppy Individuals with pet weight/size restrictions or who may be more comfortable handling a younger, lighter dog can raise for the first six months Individuals who prefer a dog that already has foundational behaviors may be interested in raising the last six months

Corporate

Employees can raise puppies individually or in teams of up to three.

Great for employee engagement and social responsibility Provides marketing, traditional media, and social media opportunities

Campus Puppies

For college students raising on campuses approved by Leader Dog.

Must participate in campus puppy club and meet with assigned puppy counselor All supplies, veterinary care and food paid by Leader Dog

To learn more, we recommend you attend an in-person information session or, watch a pre-recorded session. Visit www.leaderdog.org.

Volunteer: Host a Female Breeding Dog for Leader Dogs for the Blind

Do you love dogs? Looking for a way to give back while caring for a beautiful female and puppies? This might be the opportunity for you!

We breed Labrador retrievers, Golden retrievers, and Lab/Golden crosses to be guide dogs for people who are blind or low vision. We are looking for homes to host both female and male breeders for the duration of their breeding careers. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and will bear the legal responsibility for the host dog. However, families can have children participate in the care of the dog to share in this rewarding experience!

There are several new volunteer models including hosting a female when she is not whelping puppies, or you can host a female only when she is whelping. Or you can temporarily foster a breeding dog while they are waiting for their placement.

Hosting requires a significant time commitment, physical strength, and the ability to travel to our campus in Rochester Hills, MI several times a year. Dogs are 12-15 months of age when placed in a home. Females retired from our program by the time they are 4-5 years of age, but males can continue in the program until they are approximately 9 years old. Both are then adoptable by the host home when their breeding careers are over! Volunteers must live within 6 hours of our campus in Rochester Hills, MI, and have no more than 2 vaccinated, spay/neutered pet dogs in your home.

To learn more, visit our website and/or sign up to attend a virtual informational session.

Volunteer: Mentor

The Child Safe Michigan Mentoring Program is one of the only successful year-long programs in the state of Michigan that is dedicated primarily to youth with lived foster care experience ages 14-23. Not only do youth with lived foster care experience deal with age-appropriate issues facing youth today, but they also have to face being separated from their biological family, residing in new homes, and attending new schools all while dealing with the abuse and/or neglect that led to their placement in the foster care system.

The Mentoring Program requires at least a one-year commitment where the mentor and mentee meet two to four times per month within the community. Mentors must be at 21 years old. Once someone has decided to take the steps to becoming a mentor, they will be sent a packet of materials including an application and background check authorizations. They will be asked to provide contact information for three personal references who can attest to your character and appropriateness in mentoring a youth. Along with completing the application packet, they will participate in an interview with one of the Mentoring Program staff as a means of learning about their hobbies and interests to best match them with a mentee. This interview also allows an opportunity for them to ask questions they may have about the mentoring experience. As a final step of the application process, they will be invited to attend a six-hour New Mentor Orientation; this training is typically held on a Saturday and is conducted either in-person or virtually every three months.

Volunteer: JA Finance Park Opportunities

Junior Achievement’s mission is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. With the generous help of volunteers, JA provides educational programs to students in grades K-12 in the areas of financial literacy, workforce readiness, and entrepreneurship. The curriculum in each of JA’s 23 programs is correlated to the state education standards. JA programs will impact over 50,000 students this school year.

JA Finance Park® is a program that teaches youth about personal finance and careers. In the classroom, teachers guide youth through the lessons around key concepts. The program ends with a visit to JA Finance Park, facilitated by JA staff, where youth work with volunteers to create and manage a personal budget, experiencing what it's like to be an adult for a day. This is a great opportunity for individual and corporate volunteers.

Volunteer Training is the day of the event at 8:30 AM one hour prior to arrival of participants. Feel free to wear smart casual, corporate swag, and comfortable shoes! Volunteers work with youth as they navigate the simulation and support the JA staff facilitator. Click here for more information about JA Finance Park: https://jausa.ja.org/programs/ja-finance-park-advanced.

For the best experience, come as yourself! Share your life experiences including your failures. Ask your group members questions. You will have many opportunities. Interaction is the key to a great experience for everyone. Some will participate more than others and that's okay. Be flexible!

Thank you for volunteering. We appreciate you!

Volunteers are the heartbeat of our organization! We are successful in making an impact with our future leaders and workforce because people like you give the gift of time! Much gratitude goes out to those dedicated to our mission!

Additional information for the day of the event:

Time:  8:30 AM – 1:30 PM

Address:  577 E Larned St., Detroit, MI 48226

Parking:  Parking is available on the street in front of our building and the gated lot across street. The gated lot is a self-pay parking lot and charges $4-10. There is a sign that accepts payment through various payment apps. If both lots are filled, there is a surface lot on the west side of the building bordering Beaubien St., and parking is $10.

Lunch is around 11:30 AM. We suggest volunteers bring their lunch due to the limited delivery options.

Volunteer: DIY Kits: Learning at Home (Grades 3-5)

Overview/The Need:
In our region, nearly 40% of families struggle to afford their basic needs. The percentage of families without access to critical resources is rising, and that includes the ability to provide learning tools at home that boost childrens’ performance in school.

Building a DIY Learning at Home Kit is a great way to ensure families have important educational items to fuel learning from home. We encourage you to get your friends and neighbors involved in building these kits!

Supplies Needed:
• Sturdy container such as a cardboard box, plastic bin, or drawstring bag (one per kit).
• Please include a minimum of three flash card sets and two other items from the list below.

FLASH CARDS (age/grade indicated on box)
• Sentence structure
• Punctuation
• Adjectives
• Nouns and verbs
• Multiplication
• Division
• Fractions
• Any flash cards that are math/literacy focused

WORKBOOKS
• Vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar
• Multiplication/division, fractions, measurements

BOOKS
• Novels, poetry, short stories

LEARNING GAMES
• Riddles, trivia, Brain Quest

OTHER LITERACY TOOLS/MISC.
• Mini dry erase board with marker
• Pencils or colored pencils
• Sketch/drawing pad
• Pencil sharpener
• Supply/pencil bag/box to store items in

Please note that one kit can range greatly in price depending on where the items are purchased and in what quantity. The average range in cost per kit is $10-30. Please note that some items may be available at dollar or discount stores.

Considerations for Buying Materials:
• When you shop for materials, please keep in mind that children who receive kits come from a variety of backgrounds and demographics. It’s important to pick materials that celebrate and showcase a variety of races, ethnicities, genders, abilities, statuses, and family makeups to ensure children can see themselves and their peers represented in the materials.
• Provide materials in multiple languages. You could create a kit completely in another language or mix two languages into one kit.
• Languages most needed: English, Spanish, Arabic. (If you create kits in languages other than English, please let United Way staff know so that they can match you with an appropriate agency.)

How to Build Your Kit:
• Select your box/bin/bag plus a minimum of three flash card sets and two additional items from the above list to put in the kit.
• Collect or purchase the items. They must be new or never opened.
• Build a minimum of five kits.

Host a Drive:
• Involve your friends, family and neighbors in your volunteer efforts! Instead of purchasing items alone, host a virtual or in-person item drive. Coordinate a time and place to have the items dropped off or one location to have online purchases shipped. Be sure to set a goal of how many kits you want to complete together!

Delivery Information:
• Once you sign up (Select RESPOND), we will share delivery information with you within a few days. All kits will go to local nonprofit agencies.

Barn Sanctuary is always looking for volunteers to help us at the shelter. We rely on passionate, dedicated, and talented people for so much of what we do. Volunteering at Barn Sanctuary is a truly rewarding experience; you will have the rare and unique opportunity to get to know our resident animals and participate in work that makes a difference. Volunteering at Barn Sanctuary also provides valuable experience for those pursuing careers or passions in the animal care and protection arena.

Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities

The bulk of volunteer responsibilities consist of physical chores. Volunteers will be responsible for mucking out stalls/pens, yards, and pastures; laying clean bedding in living areas; scrubbing and refilling water buckets; restocking hay, straw, and wood shavings; and keeping each building generally clean and well-maintained.   The animals require care every day of the year, regardless of the weather and they rely on committed volunteers to be there for them. Similarly, the Shelter team is reliant upon committed volunteers to assist with tackling chores around the property rain or shine.

Volunteers complete 2 Orientations before signing up for regular shifts We ask volunteers to commit to a minimum of 2 shifts per month, for a minimum of 2 hours per shift or more (preferably regular, weekly shifts). Volunteers MUST be 18 and older to attend alone. Volunteers 14+ are permitted but must be accompanied by a parent or caretaker at all times.

Volunteer: Host a Brilliant Back to School Donation Drive

Education is a key part of our work at Brilliant Detroit. Academic support is part of setting kids up for success, as is making sure they have the right tools and resources. To make sure our families are ready to begin the school year, we gather in August at each hub to pass out important educational and health information, give out backpacks and other school supplies, and have some fun. Volunteers support this important event by collecting backpacks, school supplies, and coming out to the hubs to help with various activities at the school readiness fair. We are currently collecting backpacks and school supplies for this signature volunteer event.   We are asking that volunteers donate school supplies and/or empty or pre-filled backpacks. When responding to this post, please let us know what you would like to contribute to our efforts. Below is a list of the supplies we are looking to source this year.  Backpacks that are appropriate for elementary schoolers Packages of crayons (24 pack preferred) Packages of #2 pencils (12 pack preferred) Packages of erasers (2-4 pack of large pink erasers or several pencil top erasers) Packages of washable markers (8-12 pack preferred) Packages of colored pencils (12 pack preferred) Packages of pens (10-12 pack preferred) Packages of wide-ruled Lined paper Packages of multi-colored construction paper Notebooks with wide-ruled lined paper Packages of pocket folders Pencil sharpeners Packages of highlighters Kids' scissors Glue sticks Pencil box / soft case Dry erase markers Staplers (mini stapler preferred) Packages of staples Scotch tape with dispenser

Volunteers use their own vehicles to drive those who need transportation to and from doctors' appointments and other urgent appointments in Macomb, Oakland, and St. Clair counties.

Opportunities are flexible, volunteers decide what cities they want to drive to, how often they want to help, and the best days/times for them to volunteer, and IVC only calls to ask about those transportation requests that match the volunteer's preferences. Whether you can help with a ride once a week, once a month, or once a year-any time you can dedicate is greatly appreciated.

Give us a call to get started!
