Volunteer: Ready to Inspire & Be Inspired? Become a FATE Mentor for Detroit Youth! Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity that engages youth in Detroit? If so, Give Merit’s mentorship program, FATE, is looking for University of Michigan students to become mentors!
WHO WE ARE Our student organization, “FATE”, is a collection of students who recruit and participate as mentors for the FATE program (facilitated by a non-profit organization called Give Merit) located in Detroit. Give Merit exists to enhance and extend educational opportunities to Detroit youth through innovative enrichment and mentorship activities. Since 2012, Give Merit has worked intensively with Detroit high school students through its FATE program.
THE FATE PROGRAM FATE is a four-year, cohort-based program for high school students in Detroit who attend the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy. Its mission is to provide resources and opportunities for Detroit youth to embrace education and become world-class citizens, with a goal to motivate each student to graduate high school and attend college.
CURRICULUM The four-year curriculum features four capstone projects which include creating a marketing/advertising campaign, designing their own Merit product collection, planning and executing a city-wide charity event in Detroit called "FATE In Our Stars", and participating in an internship placement as a youth-driven marketing firm. The curriculum is complemented by ongoing soft-skill building activities and regular excursion workshops where students are exposed to a variety of local/national organizations such as Zingerman’s, Google, Carhartt, and Plante Moran.
BEING A MENTOR As mentors, we are paired with 1-2 mentees for the entire year which offers a lot of opportunities for relationship building. The purpose of the mentorship component of the FATE program is to provide guidance and support to our mentees throughout the year. We help facilitate workshop activities where students learn skills in business, marketing, and design thinking while also supporting our mentees as they develop personally and professionally. We do our best to demystify the college experience by talking to them about our majors, our extracurricular activities, and what we hope to do after graduation.
JOIN US! We are looking for students who are interested in making an impact in their community and investing in the lives of youth by becoming a mentor! Mentors will be assigned to one cohort (9th - 12th grade) and will attend programming on a weekly basis in Detroit! Transportation can be provided if needed.
Check out this video to learn more about the FATE Program and this video to learn more about the mentor experience!

Volunteer: Virtual Literacy Mentor for Center for Success NetworkVolunteer mentors are the foundation of Center for Success Network. Volunteers are asked to attend a 90-minute mentor training, complete a volunteer application that includes a background check, and participate in a 2-hour Mentoring for Equity Workshop. Mentors are then paired with a student from one of our 12 locations across Southeast Michigan. Mentors are currently virtual only and are given all the resources they’ll need to run a successful session with their student. Mentoring sessions take place on zoom and are 30 - 45 minutes long and include 4 parts - energize and goal setting, reading a book, literacy activity, and closing and reflection. Experienced staff from Center for Success Network host sessions and provide assistance and support during and after sessions to accommodate every mentor. There are two ways to mentor - consistently or and as a substitute. As a consistent mentor, we would pair you with a student, so you meet with the same student each week. As a substitute, you would mentor on a periodic basis with various students as your schedule allows and as need arises - like if a student's mentor was sick and you indicated you may be available, we would reach out to see if you could mentor that session! Volunteer: Volunteer Caregiver CoachThe Area Agency on Aging 1-B (AAA 1-B) Caregiver Coaching Program is a free program that provides mentorship and support for family caregivers. We match people who are caring for an aging or disabled loved one with a compassionate, trained volunteer for one-to-one support. Coaches help identify needs and obstacles, explore and select options, offer encouragement, and strive to build a safe and supportive environment. The program is designed to meet the needs of caregivers. There is no requirement for a certain number of communications or a specified structure or timeline. Caregivers typically speak with coaches twice a month over the phone, but every caregiver's needs are different. Coaches schedule calls in collaboration with their caregivers. Volunteer: Mentoring: Youth Aging Out of Foster CareOur House is building a unique, integrated model to support youth typically lacking the experience of growing up with significant adults in their lives. Through individual and group mentoring, life skills training, camp retreats, employment training, and supportive housing options, Our House builds upon each component to help assure successful outcomes as youth transition to adulthood. Our Mentors are instrumental in fulfilling Our House’s goal of propelling youth to reach their full potential and equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to function independently and contribute to society. They must possess a sincere desire to be personally involved with another person to help him or her achieve personal and career goals. Mentors will develop supportive relationships with foster care youth participating in the Our House programs and aid them through emotional support and social and recreational development. The Mentor provides caring companionship to supplement the work of parents, teachers, counselors, social workers and other social services and education professionals. Each Mentor will be provided with initial training before working with youth and ongoing support throughout the program. The average Mentor will put in approximately 6 to 12 hours each month in services to our youth. This commitment may come in larger or smaller doses, but the Mentor must be consistent. While Mentors may serve longer than one year, the minimum expectation of any Mentor will be one year.
