Volunteer: Giving the gift of "Presence" to Hospice Patients

Become a part of our Volunteer Team!!!! We need direct service volunteers to provide companionship to patients. A presence. We also need direct service volunteers to provide caregiver support. This volunteer will provide caregivers some much needed rest while the volunteer visits with the patient. While you are visiting you can utilize a reflections book and scribe your patient's life. Patient's appreciate knowing someone is writing a book about them! Volunteers can also utilize games, puzzles, books, crafts as ways to engage with patients who are terminally ill. Mostly volunteers will hone their skill of listening and creating a calm atmosphere for their patient.

We need Administrative Volunteers/Teens (18year olds ) and Retirees for several different tasks. Administrative Volunteers help our clinical director, office supervisor and office staff by making copies, packets, filing and faxing documents. Administrative Volunteers have helped our bereavement coordinator assemble mail outs. Volunteers help with the organization and assembling of volunteer orientation packets. How you can help

Our patient care volunteers will provide companionship and support to patient and their families with things such as: Friendly visits, Writing letters, Reading to patients, Light housekeeping, and Meal preparation. Every patient has specific needs that we match up volunteers to those specific needs. Any pet owner will agree that the presence of a dog will warm the heart and inspire the spirit which is why Hospice Compassus is seeking friendly canines to join our volunteer team. Volunteer’s along with their furry friends would be fostering meaningful connections with patients in the Metro Detroit area that could benefit from pet therapy. . The ideal volunteer is patient, compassionate, and has a heart for the elderly and dying.

For the protection of our patients all pets MUST be certified through an organization which assesses their temperment as therapy animals.

Therapy animals must be certified through an appropriate organization such as Pet Partners, Therapy Dogs International, AKC Therapy Dog Program and Therapy Dogs Incorporated. All canines must be current with vaccinations and pass an assessment for compatibility with specific hospice patient. Some training is also required for handlers to ensure you feel equipped to help our hospice patients.

Research has shown that music has a profound effect on our well-being. Hospice patients are no exception. At Seasons, we make a difference every day to patients and families coping with terminal illness while creating a center of excellence in hospice care. As a music companion volunteer you will partner with our music therapist or other support care team member to provide music that brings enjoyment, perhaps a positive well-being and much life enrichment. The ideal volunteer should enjoy singing, playing an instrument, or sharing recorded music with others.

Hospice volunteers experience a great deal of satisfaction from their service and with the patients they visit. We do hope that new volunteers will make a commitment and dedicate 4-6 hours per month to volunteering. Direct Care volunteers volunteer in their town or surrounding towns and we always work around personal or professional schedules.

Many patients and families are forever changed by their hospice volunteer.
