Volunteer: Middle/High School Youth Mentor

Volunteer: Board of Directors Chair (January 2026 - December 2028)

Elms Family and Community Services (EFCS) is seeking to fill its Board of Directors Chair role. This is a volunteer (unpaid) chair role that serves as a member of the organization’s Board.

EFCS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, located in Macomb County, Michigan.  We service youth, families and individuals in the Macomb/Wayne counties and the surrounding community.  We aim continuously to provide services, resources and support that will enable under-represented families, individuals and youth to overcome social, economic, educational and other barriers in which they face by gaining and sustaining successful outcomes in life. We do this through our support services, programs and community projects.

Summary of Role: The Board of Directors Chair provides Board oversight for the organization.

The Chair: 

Oversees the board’s work and facilitates board meetings.  The Board Chair works with the chief executive officer or senior management team to make sure things are running smoothly and keep the board informed. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Presides over meetings of the board. Serves as a partner with the Chief Executive in achieving the organization's mission. Recommends members for committees and appointing committee chairs. Works in connection with the chief executive officer to prepare board meeting agendas. Arranges for or takes part in new board member orientations. Takes the lead on the chief executive officer’s annual performance evaluation. Works with the appropriate recruitment team or chief executive officer to recruit qualified new board members, candidates. Serves as the organization’s spokesperson as needed. Takes the lead in the annual board member self-evaluation process. Serves ex officio as a member of committees and attends their meetings when invited.  Discuss issues confronting the organization with the Chief Executive. Helps guide and mediate Board actions with respect to organizational priorities and  governance concerns.  Reviews with the Chief Executive any issues of concern to the Board. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required:

Understands the mission of the organization, has a clear vision and has a passion for community service. Understands governance and leadership for organizations. Exhibits  personal standards with regard to honesty, reliability, and commitment to the role. Mentoring/coaching skills; exhibits resiliency. Knowledgeable of laws governing nonprofit organizations. Knowledgeable of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Ability to effectively chair meetings, engage Board members and community members.

Education/Experience Required:

Bachelor’s degree  or higher in business, urban planning, social work or a related field. 3-5 years in business, urban planning, social services or related experience, preferably working in a nonprofit setting. Experience reviewing/assessing financial reports, financial statements and participating in organizational annual audits. Experience serving in a Board of Director Chair role is preferred.

The successful candidate must be available to attend Board of Directors meetings monthly, quarterly or as needed and a monthly commitment of approximately 3-5 hours. Additional time will be required during orientation and budget development processes.

Term: This is a 3-year term appointment.

(e.g. streamlining customer service based on new services, tailoring revenue generating products and messages to reach a wider audience, etc.). 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

Demonstrate strong Development/Fundraising, Grants & Contract, Education, Health, Legal, Marketing, Retail or Social Services skills. Strong skills in advising executive leaders. Ability to collaborate with team members and drive results. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of nonprofit laws and regulations, marketing strategies and/or grants and contracts.  Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Education/Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Business, Education, Finance, Social Work, Marketing, Technology, Juris Doctor or other relevant degrees. 5+ years of relevant  experience. Experience serving in a Board of Directors or Board Advisor role is preferred.
