Volunteer: Card and Personal Care Items Pantry Donations

At AAMOW, we welcome any quantity of non-religious cards or placemats with messages of encouragement/thinking of you. Below are some example messages. We appreciate if cards come without envelopes and are unsigned (we add a note that they are from a caring community member). Once received, they will be sent out to clients with their meal deliveries.

Due to the diversity of our clientele, Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels typically steers away from phrases such as "I love you, you are loved, hugs, kisses, etc." on cards/placemats. However, sentiments of kindness, care, positive humor, and joy are welcomed and appreciated!

Example sentiments:

Have a nice day!

May your day be filled with joy.

Sending you warm and caring wishes.

Hope you have a wonderful day!

Your community cares about you!

Hope this card brings a smile to your face.

I hope you have a great day!

Here is a card to help bring sunshine to your day.

Thinking of you.

Volunteer: Mentor

The Child Safe Michigan Mentoring Program is one of the only successful year-long programs in the state of Michigan that is dedicated primarily to youth with lived foster care experience ages 14-23. Not only do youth with lived foster care experience deal with age-appropriate issues facing youth today, but they also have to face being separated from their biological family, residing in new homes, and attending new schools all while dealing with the abuse and/or neglect that led to their placement in the foster care system.

The Mentoring Program requires at least a one-year commitment where the mentor and mentee meet two to four times per month within the community. Mentors must be at 21 years old. Once someone has decided to take the steps to becoming a mentor, they will be sent a packet of materials including an application and background check authorizations. They will be asked to provide contact information for three personal references who can attest to your character and appropriateness in mentoring a youth. Along with completing the application packet, they will participate in an interview with one of the Mentoring Program staff as a means of learning about their hobbies and interests to best match them with a mentee. This interview also allows an opportunity for them to ask questions they may have about the mentoring experience. As a final step of the application process, they will be invited to attend a six-hour New Mentor Orientation; this training is typically held on a Saturday and is conducted either in-person or virtually every three months.

Volunteer: Letter to the Editor/Op-Ed Writing

Overview:

Learn about the current state of food, environmental, and relevant policies such as the FISCAL Act, the Farm Bill, and other local bills. Then, write a letter to the editor responding to a published article about one of these bills or an op-ed sharing your viewpoint more generally about these policy proposals. Attempt to get your piece published in a school newspaper, a local outlet, or even a regional or national one!

Learning objectives:

Improve understanding of animal agriculture’s effects on the environment and public health.Improve reading comprehension skills for scientific papers and learn to clearly communicate findings with a non-scientific audience through writing.Learn about the role of the media in public civic discourse and how to project your voice in a democratic political system.Gain effective communication skills that enable you to critically engage with this topic with varying audiences, including your peers and the publicPractice writing an evidence-based argument.Learn about skills and competencies required in political, legislative, and writing advocacy careers.

Stages:

Investigation

Research and identify potential topics within the broader topic of food choices and environment that are relevant to current legislation or recent articles published in the local press. The timeline for submitting op-eds is looser than LTEs, which typically need to be submitted quite quickly after the piece to which the LTE is responding is printed. Survey your community to understand better what they care about in relation to this issue.

Preparation and Planning

Research the specific issue, its consequences, and where it stands in the legislative process (if legislation) independently and with the support of Switch4Good materials and team.Organize research and develop a succinct argument that can be written in a few paragraphs.Research press outlets local to the district in which the legislation is being proposed, including student newspapers. Note their submission requirements and methods, including word count and whether they have an online form or accept email submissions.

Action

Write! The most effective letters to the editor are typically short, only a couple of paragraphs long. Op-eds are usually a bit longer, but not by much. The length will be determined by the guidelines of each publication. Reach out to personal, professional, and academic connections for edits and revisions. Lucy from Switch4Good is also available for review at any point during these steps.

Demonstration

Pitch the LTE or op-ed to the press outlets you found in your research! Repeat steps up to this point for each LTE or op-ed written.

Deliverables:

Documentation of research and planning (notes, outline, etc.).Documentation of editing and revision (track changes, comments, edited and final drafts, etc.). Final drafts of at least five letters to the editor or op-edsDocumentation of pitching LTEs or op-eds to press outlets, including any publications.

Junior Achievement’s mission is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. With the generous help of volunteers, JA provides educational programs to students in grades K-12 in the areas of financial literacy, workforce readiness, and entrepreneurship. This is a great opportunity for individual and corporate volunteers.

Volunteer Training is the day of the event at 8:30 AM one hour prior to arrival of participants. Feel free to wear smart casual, corporate swag, and comfortable shoes! Volunteers work with youth as they navigate the simulation and support the JA staff facilitator. Volunteer: Adopt-A-Garden

Adopt-A-Garden & Help Survivors Heal!

Looking for a meaningful way to give back? Join First Step’s Adopt-A-Garden program! We are a local nonprofit supporting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, and we need caring individuals, groups, and companies to help maintain our beautiful Healing Gardens.

These gardens provide a peaceful space for respite, play, staff lunches, events, and even counseling sessions—a vital part of the healing journey for survivors and their families. By adopting a garden, you’ll help create and preserve this safe, welcoming environment.

Here’s how you can help:

ü  Weeding & general clean-up – Planting is not required

ü  If planting, staff approval is needed to ensure all additions are non-invasive

ü  New plants require extra care! Frequent watering is needed until they’re established, so more visits may be required

ü  Annuals will need to be removed in the fall as part of garden cleanup

ü  Choose a schedule that works for you – Weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly from May to October (volunteers can start anytime!)

o   No experience necessary! If you love being outdoors and want to make a difference, this is a great opportunity.

o   Some gardening equipment is available, but bringing your own tools is encouraged.

o   First Step is a secure facility, so all volunteers must complete an online application, a background check, and pre-schedule shifts with our Volunteer Specialist.

Ready to dig in and make an impact? Sign up today and help create a space of healing and hope! For more details, see the flyer below or contact Barb Davis at bdavis@firststep-mi.org or call 734.656.0757.

Volunteer: Lobby Runner at Hope Clinic

Hope Clinic offers free, whole-person healthcare to those without insurance, and we need folks to be there for them when they walk in the door!

Lobby Runners help with a variety of tasks at our Ypsilanti location, including:  check-in volunteers; receive/organize drop-off donations and deliveries that flow in to us throughout the day from generous donors; helping the Front Desk team with varied tasks/projects as needed.

There can sometimes be a lot of down time during shifts, so volunteers can bring a book to read, work on homework, etc. As long as you are ready to help at a moment's notice when needed, it can be a great chance to get some homework done and volunteer at the same time!

Lobby Runner volunteers should have ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to work on your feet for extended periods. Lobby Runner volunteer shifts are available Monday - Saturday. You will be provided access to an online scheduler system so you can simply sign up when it works for you - no recurring schedule commitment is necessary.

If interested, please either respond to this posting or email volunteer@thehopeclinic.org. We will get back to you with more information!

Or, fill out a volunteer application on our website: https://thehopeclinic.org/volunteer

Volunteer: Ready to Inspire & Be Inspired? Become a FATE Mentor for Detroit Youth!

Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity that engages youth in Detroit? If so, Give Merit’s mentorship program, FATE, is looking for University of Michigan students to become mentors!

WHO WE ARE

Our student organization, “FATE”, is a collection of students who recruit and participate as mentors for the FATE program (facilitated by a non-profit organization called Give Merit) located in Detroit. Give Merit exists to enhance and extend educational opportunities to Detroit youth through innovative enrichment and mentorship activities. Since 2012, Give Merit has worked intensively with Detroit high school students through its FATE program.

THE FATE PROGRAM

FATE is a four-year, cohort-based program for high school students in Detroit who attend the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy. Its mission is to provide resources and opportunities for Detroit youth to embrace education and become world-class citizens, with a goal to motivate each student to graduate high school and attend college.

CURRICULUM

The four-year curriculum features four capstone projects which include creating a marketing/advertising campaign, designing their own Merit product collection, planning and executing a city-wide charity event in Detroit called "FATE In Our Stars", and participating in an internship placement as a youth-driven marketing firm. The curriculum is complemented by ongoing soft-skill building activities and regular excursion workshops where students are exposed to a variety of local/national organizations such as Zingerman’s, Google, Carhartt, and Plante Moran.

BEING A MENTOR

As mentors, we are paired with 1-2 mentees for the entire year which offers a lot of opportunities for relationship building. The purpose of the mentorship component of the FATE program is to provide guidance and support to our mentees throughout the year. We help facilitate workshop activities where students learn skills in business, marketing, and design thinking while also supporting our mentees as they develop personally and professionally. We do our best to demystify the college experience by talking to them about our majors, our extracurricular activities, and what we hope to do after graduation.

JOIN US!

We are looking for students who are interested in making an impact in their community and investing in the lives of youth by becoming a mentor! Mentors will be assigned to one cohort (9th - 12th grade) and will attend programming on a weekly basis in Detroit! Transportation can be provided if needed.

Check out this video to learn more about the FATE Program and this video to learn more about the mentor experience!

Volunteer: Become our backup internet technology support

The Women's Center, an independent counseling nonprofit, could use help with internet technology and security.

Currently, we're installing, upgrading, connecting, and coding everything ourselves. We know that there are better ways to do it, but lack time to master the necessary skills.

We know that you could do it faster and better!

We could use help with everything from setting up a secure WiFi booster (not even sure that's what the thingamajig is called!) to updating WordPress PHP to figuring out why our printer drivers won't talk to us.

Ideally, we would develop a long-term relationship with you at a pace of ~8 hours/month.

We'd like to get the chance to know you, and for you to know us and to feel a part of our mission.
