The Ypsilanti Thrift Shop is in urgent need of volunteers that can commit to a regular shift, for example, a morning or afternoon 3.5 hour recurring shift for a day during the week. The Ypsilanti Thrift Shop, a local all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit, is in need of volunteers to help in our Marking room.  In this position you would be responsible for receiving, sorting, marking/pricing, and displaying donations for sale. You may also assist with bi-annual changeover and other duties as needed. You would also enjoy first dibs to purchase donated items! This is a very sociable and fun way to give back to the community as all of our net proceeds are donated to local charities and people in need. Community Housing Network is in need of "Welcome Home Baskets". We collect basic necessities for people escaping homelessness so that they can thrive in their new homes. We also provide basic necessities to our other program participants as needed.

HAVEN has a 3/4 acre produce garden onsite. It allows us to provide survivors with healthy food and programming around healthy eating and living.  We are looking for willing volunteers to help us get the garden ready for the new season. We have a list of projects to get done, and we can't do it without you! So whether it is just you, or you're bringing a group with you, we welcome all to our garden. 

**As a reminder, our agency has a policy in place that clients must be out of services for a minimum of 12 months before becoming eligible to volunteer. This policy exists to ensure that individuals have the necessary time and space to focus fully on their healing and recovery journey.

In my ongoing commitment to supporting those in need within our community, I am reaching out to you with an appeal that is especially close to my heart. As we prepare for the upcoming school year, many families, particularly those of veterans and returning citizens—face challenges in providing basic school essentials for their children. Access to proper supplies can mean the difference between a confident start and a discouraging one for these students. We are here to serve the entire community. We will not leave anyone out that is in need ( Backpacks) of starting their school year off to a wonderful start.

This is my third year of asking for donations for Back-to-School Backpacks and School Supplies. Last year (2024) I was able to distribute over 150 backpacks’ (my goal was 100 Backpacks). This year’s goal is 200, because the need is always greater each year.

I'm looking for Clear Backpacks (whatever you can Afford within your Budget) along with school supplies (many of the schools are requesting Clear type of Backpack for safety reasons) . Whatever you can donate is greatly appreciated. My goal for this year is 200 Backpacks with school supplies.

United Way Community Fulfillment Center

The United Way Community Fulfillment Center envisions a community where community members have seamless access to basic everyday essentials that are appropriate and of great quality through providing brand-new clothing, housewares, electronics, food and beverages, cleaning supplies, and home and automotive hardware. This program solely relies on donations from agency partners to support low-income families, local non-profit organizations, faith-based institutions, and grassroot community organizations within Southeastern Michigan. 

Our amazing Community Fulfillment Center's storeroom needs a couple of volunteers to assist clients and partners, sort donations, restock shelves, and perform light data entry tasks. Staff is available to direct volunteers every Wednesday from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. We greatly appreciate your consideration and support! 

Volunteers will work with our site manager to welcome and assist clients, load donations into vehicles, sort donations, restock the shelves, complete data entry, and create a positive client experience. In addition, volunteers work directly with clients providing them with the basic needs and personal care items they need to support families in an uplifting and hopeful context.  

Volunteers may also assist with physical improvements to the space, including painting.

We are excited to offer volunteers the opportunity to receive training in disaster relief efforts. These trainings will equip you with essential skills and knowledge to effectively assist communities in times of crisis. By participating, you will learn about emergency response strategies, resource distribution, and community support techniques. Join us in this rewarding experience and become a vital part of our mission to help those in need during challenging times. Together, we can make a difference!

The program also hosts additional annual distributions for families and non & for-profit organizations, including perishable and non-perishables, brand-new clothing, houseware, electronics, beverages, cleaning supplies, household appliances, automotive hardware, and holiday gifts.

The Children’s Healing Center is the first year-round recreation facility providing social and emotional healing for kids with weakened immune systems and their families in a safe, clean environment.

We need help preparing for our programs - everything from cutting things out, laminating, putting together example art projects, and helping staff set up for programs.

The Children’s Healing Center is the first year-round recreation facility providing social and emotional healing for kids with weakened immune systems and their families in a safe, clean environment.

We utilize volunteers for all of our programs, but need extra help for our weekend programs from September through June. There are two Saturday programs (morning from 10-12 or afternoon 2-4) and one Friday night (6-8pm) each month. 

Volunteers will assist kids with art projects, playing games, serving snacks, and supervising free play.

All volunteers are subject to an interview and background checks.

Hope Clinic offers free, whole-person healthcare to those without insurance, and we need folks to help in our Food & Basic Needs program!

Hope Clinic's Walk-up Groceries allow clients to get produce, flowers, and a few shelf-stable foods each week without a scheduled appointment. The first 30ish minutes of each shift is the busiest, but things quiet down significantly after that.

Our Monday shift is a great way to test the waters if you are a first-time volunteer at the Farm Stand, but our greatest needs are for volunteers on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Read to a Child is a national literacy and mentoring non-profit that fosters a love of reading, improves literacy skills, and empowers underserved children by inspiring adults to read aloud to them regularly. Research shows that reading aloud to children is the single most important activity for eventual success in reading, a key factor for success in school, work, and life.  When an adult reads aloud to a child, both parties have a joyful, rewarding experience that instills a love of reading, improves literacy skills, and enhances a child’s self-confidence. 

WHAT IS NEEDED? Volunteers are needed to serve as reading mentors for Kindergarten through fourth graders at local schools during their lunchtime. The goal is to instill a love of reading and provide social-emotional support.

WHEN DOES THE PROGRAM TAKE PLACE? WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT? Mentors attend 30 minute reading sessions with their student once a week or every other week through the end of the school year.

WHERE DOES THE PROGRAM TAKE PLACE? Volunteers participate in sessions at one of partner schools (https://readtoachild.org/locations/detroit/participating-schools-detroit/).

HOW ARE THE CHILDREN SELECTED FOR THE PROGRAM? Teachers select specific students to participate in the Read Aloud Mentoring Program because they are 1) behind their age group in reading proficiency; 2) would benefit from the attention of a caring adult; 3) and/or English is their second language.

I’VE NEVER BEEN A READING MENTOR. WILL I RECEIVE ANY TRAINING? Yes. All volunteers will attend an information and training session prior to beginning the program.

ONCE I JOIN THE PROGRAM, WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE A QUESTION OR CAN’T MAKE IT TO MY SCHEDULED READING SESSION FOR THE WEEK? The Read Aloud Mentoring Program is well-managed by a Program Coordinator staffed at each site. If you have questions, or cannot make it to your reading session you can call the Program Coordinator to notify them and reschedule where possible.

La Casa Amiga is looking for volunteers to help with the distribution of emergency food boxes throughout Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb County. This is an outside volunteer opportunity. We will need volunteers to help collect information, direct traffic, and place boxes and groceries into trunks.

It is important that you wear comfortable clothing and closed toe shoes. Be mindful of the weather conditions as you will be outside. Consider bringing work gloves.

We’re recruiting Virtual and In-Person Literacy Mentors!

Our Mentor Family is the foundation of our organization. Our team works closely alongside you to ensure that we support the bright futures of our students. The Center for Success Network is looking for people who love children and have a willingness to share time and joy with our staff and students as a virtual literacy mentor.

Requirements:
- 90 Minute Training Session
- 2-hour virtual Mentoring for Equity workshop
- Minimum commitment of one session weekly through the full program year
- Service commitment through the entire Academic School Year (October- May)
- A Background Check
- High School Juniors and Seniors are also eligible to become mentors, but must have 2 non-family references

Sessions are literacy focused and include time to build relationships with their students. Mentoring sessions will be 30-45 minutes long for virtual sessions and 1 hour for in-person sessions. These sessions will include 4 parts: energize and goal setting, reading a book, literacy activity, and closing and reflection. Our experienced staff are present the entire session in case a mentor has a question or needs some assistance.

Hello! We are in need of help with our food distribution site. Food is delivered by our grantors, and our facility stores the food and gets it ready for distribution. Hours vary. Requires some flexibility with the schedule. 4 hours per week, and information on the distributions would be available the week prior. Will have to use a pallet-jack. You can help!  The Community Literacy Council, a non-profit organization, needs adult volunteers to help adult English language learners in Western Wayne County who have limited English language abilities.  Most of our tutors work one-on-one with learners to help them develop vital reading, writing, and communication skills.  Tutor training sessions are available three times a year.  Tutors are able to pick their learners and tutor locations although typically tutoring takes place in public libraries.  You too can make a difference in the life of an English language learner!

Meal delivery volunteers serve a critical role in our program and in the lives of our neighbors who are homebound due to their health status. Volunteers choose the day (Monday-Saturday) and frequency (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, substitute) for volunteering. Meals are picked up at the Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels office at 11:30am, and routes typically take 1-2 hours to complete.

At AAMOW, we welcome any quantity of non-religious cards or placemats with messages of encouragement/thinking of you. Below are some example messages. We appreciate if cards come without envelopes and are unsigned (we add a note that they are from a caring community member). Once received, they will be sent out to clients with their meal deliveries.  

Due to the diversity of our clientele, Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels typically steers away from phrases such as "I love you, you are loved, hugs, kisses, etc." on cards/placemats. However, sentiments of kindness, care, positive humor, and joy are welcomed and appreciated!

Personal Care/Pantry Item Needs 

AAMOW has a personal care items pantry that clients can access free of charge, and items are delivered with their meals. Donations of the following items for the pantry are being sought on an ongoing basis: 

Boxes of tissues  

Individually wrapped rolls of paper towel  

Individually wrapped rolls of toilet paper  

Laundry detergent (minimally scented) 

Antibacterial hand soap (minimally scented)  

Antibacterial dish soap (minimally scented)

Large print activity books (crossword, word search, sudoku, coloring books, etc.)

Cards, placemats, and new/unused personal care/pantry donations can be mailed or dropped off in the purple container in the foyer of our office between 8-11am and 12-4pm Monday through Saturday.     

The Child Safe Michigan Mentoring Program is one of the only successful year-long programs in the state of Michigan that is dedicated primarily to youth with lived foster care experience ages 14-23. Not only do youth with lived foster care experience deal with age-appropriate issues facing youth today, but they also have to face being separated from their biological family, residing in new homes, and attending new schools all while dealing with the abuse and/or neglect that led to their placement in the foster care system.

The Mentoring Program requires at least a one-year commitment where the mentor and mentee meet two to four times per month within the community. Mentors must be at 21 years old. Once someone has decided to take the steps to becoming a mentor, they will be sent a packet of materials including an application and background check authorizations. They will be asked to provide contact information for three personal references who can attest to your character and appropriateness in mentoring a youth. Along with completing the application packet, they will participate in an interview with one of the Mentoring Program staff as a means of learning about their hobbies and interests to best match them with a mentee. This interview also allows an opportunity for them to ask questions they may have about the mentoring experience. As a final step of the application process, they will be invited to attend a six-hour New Mentor Orientation; this training is typically held on a Saturday and is conducted either in-person or virtually every three months.

We’re looking for a compassionate, experienced hair stylists to volunteer their time for a special event, providing haircuts to children with Autism. The ideal volunteers are patient, understanding, and have experience working with kids who may have sensory sensitivities. Your time and talent can help make haircuts a positive, stress-free experience for our clients.

Gleaners distribution centers process a tremendous volume of donated and purchased food to serve our neighbors in need. Volunteer tasks include packing food, sorting produce, working in the Clean Room, and more!

Shifts run every weekday from 9am-11:30am and from 1pm-3:30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Up to 40 volunteers needed per shift depending on the type of shift.

This project requires that you are able to stand for several hours, though accommodations may be made with advance notice. Volunteers must be in 8th grade or older. If you have food allergies, such as nuts, you are advised to exercise caution when determining whether or not to participate in warehouse activities. This event is not suitable for court-ordered community service.

The Children's Healing Center sits on 3.18 acres near Eagle Crest Golf Course. We have a beautiful property that needs the lawn mowed every other week (minimum). We have a riding lawn mower and a trimmer ready for you to use. We're not sure how long it'll take to mow since we're new and just got the mower. Can be flexible with when you do the work. Starts in early-mid June and would run through early fall.

The SOS Food Pantry needs strong and dependable volunteers to assist in unloading the Food Gatherers Delivery truck that arrives every Monday at 1pm. This shift involves heavy lifting and frequent movement carrying objects over 30lbs and is a fast paced task. We try our best to unload the truck within an hour or less so the Food Gatherers driver can move on to their next delivery quickly. Experience using dollies is preferred but not required.

Work with us to get food to others in our community that are in need. Assist shoppers as they make their way around the pantry, complete walk-up orders, and help keep the pantry stocked during distribution hours. This position interacts directly with clients, requires frequent movement and lifting, and is often fast paced.

Developing K.I.D.S. receives food deliveries every Tuesday from Trader Joe's.

We are looking for volunteers to support at our Drop-in Center. Our drop-in center serves at risk, runaway and homeless teenagers ages 13-21 on Monday-Thursdays from 3-6pm. Junior Achievement’s mission is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. With the generous help of volunteers, JA provides educational programs to students in grades K-12 in the areas of financial literacy, workforce readiness, and entrepreneurship. The curriculum in each of JA’s 23 programs is correlated to the state education standards. JA programs will impact over 50,000 students this school year. 

JA Finance Park® is a program that teaches youth about personal finance and careers. In the classroom, teachers guide youth through the lessons around key concepts. The program ends with a visit to JA Finance Park, facilitated by JA staff, where youth work with volunteers to create and manage a personal budget, experiencing what it's like to be an adult for a day. This is a great opportunity for individual and corporate volunteers.

Volunteer Training is the day of the event at 8:30 AM one hour prior to arrival of participants. Looking for a meaningful way to give back? Join First Step’s Adopt-A-Garden program! We are a local nonprofit supporting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, and we need caring individuals, groups, and companies to help maintain our beautiful Healing Gardens.

These gardens provide a peaceful space for respite, play, staff lunches, events, and even counseling sessions—a vital part of the healing journey for survivors and their families. By adopting a garden, you’ll help create and preserve this safe, welcoming environment.

Here’s how you can help:

ü  Weeding & general clean-up – Planting is not required

ü  If planting, staff approval is needed to ensure all additions are non-invasive

ü  New plants require extra care! Frequent watering is needed until they’re established, so more visits may be required

ü  Annuals will need to be removed in the fall as part of garden cleanup

ü  Choose a schedule that works for you – Weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly from May to October (volunteers can start anytime!)

Wish Granter Volunteer:
Work with a partner to meet with wish kids and their families to help determine their wishes and, and then work with our staff to make those wishes a reality. Wish-granting volunteers must be 21 years of age, attend a wish-granting training and be able to commit to at least one year of volunteering.

Volunteers needed at the U-M Health Brighton Center for Specialty Care. We have two openings.

1. Medical Procedures Unit: Volunteers assist with turning over prep/recovery bays, cleaning stretchers, making beds, providing snacks and drinks to patients as directed and wheeling patients to car after discharged.

2. Neurology BCSC Sleep Lab: Review patient arrival process, scan patient documents and enter into an access database. Greet patient and family, escort to treatment area, restock areas i.e. patient supply cart and rooms, blanket warmer,  etc.

As a volunteer receptionist, you will greet visitors, thank donors and do light clerical tasks.  This is a great way for community members to become involved in our work on a low-key scale. Hope Clinic offers free medical care to those without insurance, and we need folks to be there for them when they walk in the door!

We are looking for volunteers who can come on a weekly basis to help answer phones, schedule appointments, check people in/out, etc. Hope Clinic has two locations - one in Ypsilanti and one in Westland/Wayne. People are needed at both!

The ideal people in this role are those with previous medical or front desk experience, but not required. What is required, though, is for someone who is:

Camp STAR is a program of STAR Children's Bereavement Services. It is a free weekend long grief camp for kids and teens, ages 8-17, that have experienced the death of a significant person in their lives. Join us in providing support and comfort to children. Lobby Runners help with a variety of tasks at our Ypsilanti location, including:  check-in volunteers; receive/organize drop-off donations and deliveries that flow in to us throughout the day from generous donors; helping the Front Desk team with varied tasks/projects as needed.

There can sometimes be a lot of down time during shifts, so volunteers can bring a book to read, work on homework, etc. As long as you are ready to help at a moment's notice when needed, it can be a great chance to get some homework done and volunteer at the same time!

Lobby Runner volunteers should have ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to work on your feet for extended periods. Lobby Runner volunteer shifts are available Monday - Saturday. Wayne Metro is recuiting two Volunteer positions for Income Tax Preparation. Both are at locations across Wayne County.

Greeter: Provide a welcoming greeting to tax prepartion clients and check to make sure they have needed documents. Maintain client confidentiality. Time Commitment: 12 hours Total (6 hour training required + 6 hour minimum time volunteering).

Tax Preparer: Provide Taxpayers with accurate, quality Tax Prep services as part of a team. All forms completed will undergo a multi-step review by Wayne Metro employees. Maintain client confidentiality. Time commitment: 24 hours Total (6 hour training, 6 hour IRS Certification training, and 12 hour minimum time volunteering).
