Volunteer: Stewardship Crew Volunteer

The stewardship crews are the go-to team for any challenge facing the Refuge. Volunteers are invited to assist with a variety of habitat management activities including invasive species control (mowing, herbicide application, tree and brush cutting with hand saws and loppers), seed collecting/handling/broadcasting, and occasional assistance with water level management.

Stewardship crews also perform a variety of visitor services-focused tasks including trail creation and maintenance, kiosk construction, and interpretive signage repairs. This type of work requires heavy physical labor in natural areas and in challenging environments. Participants must be in good physical condition.

All necessary tools are provided.

Age Requirement: Age 16 years old and up (all minors must be accompanied by a guardian). For safety purposes, minors will never be allowed to work alone or with just one other volunteer, unless it is their guardian. Minors are not permitted to drive refuge vehicles.

The local American Lung Association office in Southfield, MI has volunteer opportunities for small groups a few times a month. The Committee meets from March-May about every 3 weeks or so leading up to Lung Cancer Action Week. Volunteer: Virtual Visits with Seniors

Conversations to Remember is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated towards combating loneliness and isolation felt by senior citizens. Our virtual visit program matches 2-3 college students with residents of long-term care, assisted living, and memory care communities for virtual video visits. These residents have been suffering from isolation, and you could really brighten their days just by speaking with them. We provide training about the best ways to interact with the seniors, as well as additional support throughout our volunteers' service. Since these visits are virtual, you can do it without any travel. This is both convenient, and allows more time to be spent volunteering, rather than commuting to the volunteering location. We provide this program free of charge to seniors across the country, and have students from around the country as well. 

Typically, students volunteer 1-2 hours per week. Each call lasts up to one hour, based on the senior's attention span and mood on each day. We expect students to volunteer for approximately 16 weeks, so that they can build a friendship with the senior. This does not need to coincide with the start of a semester, as we have new seniors starting all the time, and train new volunteers weekly. The students are matched based on the times that they're available, with a senior who is available at the same time, and they will have a regular, weekly appointment for their visit. Students wishing for more visits or other opportunities that allow them to volunteer more hours can be accommodated with different ways to volunteer, such as assisting us with our social media, call support, or outreach.

Hire MI Vet (HMV) is one of the premier Veteran service organizations in the greater Southeast Michigan area. Founded in 2015, the organization  brings leaders from the community together to exchange ideas and take action to better the Veteran community. Assists Treasurer to ensure all expense and bills for HMV are paid in a timely manner Provides resources and support to the financial oversight group in the following area: Assists with the preparation of the annual budget in coordination with the President and the organization’s Treasurer.

 A position as demanding as Executive Director for an organization with the caliber of HMV requires specific personal attributes and business skills. Some of these include:

Wayne County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) provides a voice for abused and neglected children in Juvenile Court proceedings through highly trained community volunteers. We believe every child in Wayne County deserves a safe and permanent home, where they can thrive. And we believe every child should have the opportunity to grow and develop into a contributing member of our community. 

CASA volunteer advocates are ordinary people, just like you, with an extraordinary desire to help children. After completing a CASA training course, CASA volunteers are appointed by a jurist to one case involving a child or set of siblings who have experienced abuse and neglect, and placed in the foster care system. A CASA volunteer gathers information to help identify the child’s needs, present written reports at court hearings, help the child understand court proceedings, recommend services and more—all to help the judge make the best decisions to guide the child out of the foster care system and into a safe, permanent home. CASA volunteers must be 21 years or older, pass an extensive screening and background check, and have the ability to commit 10-20 hours a month to the case.

We are looking for new or gently used items to decorate the shelter homes.  Our goal is to decorate the shelters to give them a warm homey feel. We want our shelters to feel very welcoming, safe and happy; homeless families typically move 5-6 times before securing stable housing.    Misc. Hope Not Handcuffs is an initiative started by Families Against Narcotics (FAN), aimed at bringing law enforcement and community organizations together in an effort to find viable treatment options for individuals seeking help to reduce dependency with heroin, prescription drugs, and alcohol. It is a solution.

 

How It Works

A person struggling with any substance use disorder can come to any of the participating police agencies and ask for help. They will be greeted with support, compassion, and respect. If accepted into the program*, the individual will be guided through a brief intake process to ensure proper treatment placement.
 
If a person is uninsured or has Medicaid, we will work directly with the local Office of Substance Abuse Services for placement. If a person has private insurance, we will provide them with treatment options covered by their plan. Regardless, our team will work to get them into treatment as soon as possible. We have more than 600 volunteer Angels, and one of them will help with paperwork and provide compassionate support until a treatment option is found.

The ideal MMAP volunteer is someone who enjoys learning, likes meeting new people, has some experience using computers and loves challenges. MMAP counseling services can be provided to callers over the phone, virtually or at specific sites in the community, such as senior centers.  MMAP volunteers may assist older adults or individuals with a disability by helping to resolve problems and answer questions, explaining eligibility requirements, assisting in filling out forms or filing appeals, and resolving billing problems, among other issues. Last year, we worked with thousands of local residents and saved them hundreds of thousands of dollars.  

 

Training begins with a MMAP Orientation meeting and continues with online training, mentoring and assistance.  One-hour MMAP Orientations are conducted the first Thursday of each month virtually at 11:00 a.m.

Using your own equipment, take photographs of native flora and fauna, special events, and of Refuge staff and partners working in the field. Close ups/Macro photos are preferred. Photographs will become property of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and may be used in a variety of outreach materials and online.

To make this volunteer position easier to manage, we ask volunteers to use their own camera equipment and to travel to open areas on the Refuge in their own vehicle/boat/feet on their own time. Please be sure to stay on Refuge trails and only access areas that are open to the general public. At this point in time, only three of our Refuge units are open to self-guided exploration. The Gibraltar Bay Unit is located on Grosse Ile at 28820 East River Road. The Fix and Strong Units are located in Monroe County. Check out the Refuge website for directions. In addition, we do offer a variety of Open Houses throughout the year at Humbug Marsh in Trenton. The public is allowed to visit the trails during these dates and you are welcome to attend and take photographs.    

In order to keep the integrity and quality of your photos, we ask that you deliver them to us through a free web site called dropbox.com. You will need to set up a free account for yourself. Once you have your account, upload your labeled “Best of the Best” photos and invite us to view your folder.

Volunteer: Girls on the Run Monthly Volunteer Meeting

Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan is looking for volunteers for our upcoming spring 2023 season! Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based positive youth development program designed to develop and enhance girls’ social, psychological, and physical competencies to successfully navigate life experiences. Meeting twice a week, our trained and caring coaches teach life skills to 3rd-8th grade girls through dynamic lessons and physical activity. Our research-based curriculum establishes lifelong healthy habits and instills critical social-emotional skills at a time when girls need it the most. Each season concludes with a celebratory 5k event. Completing a 5k gives the girls a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals.

Join us on the first Tuesday of each month to participate in a little volunteerism at the office! Here we will focus on packing materials for our site leaders, packing season materials, folding program shirts, end of season materials return and more! We will also discuss future opportunities such as the community-based Girls on the Run 5K event. Meetings dates and times are listed below (but may be subject to change):

Community Partner: Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan

Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan is looking for volunteers for our upcoming spring 2023 season! Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based positive youth development program designed to develop and enhance girls’ social, psychological, and physical competencies to successfully navigate life experiences. Meeting twice a week, our trained and caring coaches teach life skills to 3rd-8th grade girls through dynamic lessons and physical activity. Our research-based curriculum establishes lifelong healthy habits and instills critical social-emotional skills at a time when girls need it the most. Each season concludes with a celebratory 5k event. Completing a 5k gives the girls a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals.

Join us on the first Tuesday of each month to participate in a little volunteerism at the office! Here we will focus on packing materials for our site leaders, packing season materials, folding program shirts, end of season materials return and more! We will also discuss future opportunities such as the community-based Girls on the Run 5K event. Meetings dates and times are listed below (but may be subject to change):

This is a volunteer position, which includes a mileage reimbursement of $0.75 per occupied mile for those drivers who request it. Schedules are very flexible, allowing drivers to provide as many or as few rides as desired, based on available ride requests. Term limits will likely initially be one to three years. We are looking for persons with one of the following: extensive leadership experience, demonstrated success as a committee chair or board member, and/or experience in building nonprofit sectors.

We are looking for any and all level of interest at this point and from any/all career perspectives ranging from Social Work, Information technology to Health care and Allied professions.  We are very much looking for other Physicians and Health Providers who may be interested in volunteering for a few hours or more a month from the safety of your home!  We are also strongly interested in Social workers and Mental health therapists or Psychiatrists.  All appointments, meetings and interventions will be done online and can be done from the safety of your home.  Safety is our number one priority while still providing access to Healthcare. 

At Detroit VITALS, we believe Healthcare is not a privilege but a right and we need your help to make this a reality!! 

Our goal will be to start providing primary care and limited specialty services by the end of winter of 2022 to persons without health insurance in Wayne, Washtenaw and Oakland counties (Metro-Detroit).  We will start teaching and working with volunteers likely prior to the end of 2022.  

Shifts are still being worked out in conjunction with operating hours which are subject to change.  Currently, there will be expected 1 shift per month and 1 shift as a back up person.  Tentatively the clinic (when open) will be seeing patients from 5 pm to 8 pm hours Tuesday thru Thursday (3 hour shifts).

ACC is a proud food distribution partner of Forgotten Harvest. Our location serves an estimated 200+ individuals weekly. Distribution takes place every Thursday morning from 8:30am - 12:30pm or until supplies last. 

Volunteers are needed to assist with unloading and organizing the food items into boxes inside our warehouse and distributing to clients in attendance. Currently we are operating as a drive-thru and walkup system, where the food is loaded directly into clients' cars or carts. 

Volunteers will work primarily outdoors unless sorting food in our warehouse; please dress according to the weather and wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Close-toed shoes recommended. Lifting boxes of 25+ lbs is often involved, but there are frequently smaller/lighter items to be sorted as well. If accommodations are needed, please let us know.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Earthworks! We are seeking dependable individuals to assist us with various tasks to help us maintain our gardens. Volunteers help with weeding, harvesting, garden bed prepping, planting and general garden maintenance.

The type of volunteer work we have may depend on many variables such as the time of year, weather, size, and age of the group or otherwise. As such, it's difficult to share what exactly volunteers will be doing on a particular date.

In general, some of those things may include:

mixing soil/making soil blocks or germination trays flipping compost planting/seeding or thinning out seedlings pricking out seedling/transplants harvesting/processing produce cultivating/weeding beds general cleanup and other tasks generally related to gardening or farming.

In other words, manual labor that includes lifting, kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting, turning, shoveling, raking, etc. Caution may be required when working or walking on ground that is loose, uneven or slippery.

Volunteering at Earthworks is a great way to help our cause of growing food sustainably for our community, as well as, restore our connection to the environment. It is also a way for you to learn new skills, meet new people and make a difference.

We are hosting volunteers Wednesday - Friday from 9 am - 11 am and 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm.

New volunteers that are interested in volunteering with Earthworks Urban Farm should register as a user via Volunteer Hub and when asked for affiliations should check "I am interested in Earthworks Urban Farm". An Earthworks staff person will reach out to the volunteer to discuss specific onboarding requirements. If you already have a Volunteer Hub account with the Capuchins, please reach out to Wendy Casey at wcasey@cskdetroit.org for details on how to sign up for Earthworks events.

First-time volunteers are not required to go through a background check. If you enjoy your experience after volunteering for the first-time and would like to continue volunteering, you will have to complete a background check. This process is mandatory for returning first-time volunteers. It is an easy process and free of charge to you. The results should take about 1-2 days. If you are approved to volunteer again, you would be able to schedule to volunteer.

Minimum volunteer age is seven years, and must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The minor and the adult volunteer must each have their own Volunteer Hub account, and must both be registered for the same shift. Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Earthworks! We are seeking dependable individuals to assist us with various tasks to help us maintain our gardens. Volunteers help with weeding, harvesting, garden bed prepping, planting and general garden maintenance.

The type of volunteer work we have may depend on many variables such as the time of year, weather, size, and age of the group or otherwise. As such, it's difficult to share what exactly volunteers will be doing on a particular date.

In general, some of those things may include:

mixing soil/making soil blocks or germination trays flipping compost planting/seeding or thinning out seedlings pricking out seedling/transplants harvesting/processing produce cultivating/weeding beds general cleanup and other tasks generally related to gardening or farming.

In other words, manual labor that includes lifting, kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting, turning, shoveling, raking, etc. Caution may be required when working or walking on ground that is loose, uneven or slippery.

Volunteering at Earthworks is a great way to help our cause of growing food sustainably for our community, as well as, restore our connection to the environment. It is also a way for you to learn new skills, meet new people and make a difference.

We are hosting volunteers Wednesday - Friday from 9 am - 11 am and 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm.

New volunteers that are interested in volunteering with Earthworks Urban Farm should register as a user via Volunteer Hub and when asked for affiliations should check "I am interested in Earthworks Urban Farm". An Earthworks staff person will reach out to the volunteer to discuss specific onboarding requirements. If you already have a Volunteer Hub account with the Capuchins, please reach out to Wendy Casey at wcasey@cskdetroit.org for details on how to sign up for Earthworks events.

First-time volunteers are not required to go through a background check. If you enjoy your experience after volunteering for the first-time and would like to continue volunteering, you will have to complete a background check. This process is mandatory for returning first-time volunteers. It is an easy process and free of charge to you. The results should take about 1-2 days. If you are approved to volunteer again, you would be able to schedule to volunteer.

Volunteer: Social Media Marketing Intern For Malnutrition Treatment and Family Preservation Center in Haiti

We are a small, faith-based non-profit working to alleviate severe acute malnutrition— and address some of the causes that lead to it— in the country of Haiti. We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic Social Media/Marketing intern who can help us communicate and connect with our donor base, which is primarily in the U.S. This position will be fully remote and can be done from anywhere that has reliable internet access. Hours are flexible (you can work on your own schedule), but ideally we’re looking for a commitment of 5-10 hours per week for a minimum of 3 months. .

As a nonprofit organization working internationally, most of our donors will never have the opportunity to see our mission in person, so it’s vitally important to make sure that our supporters are involved and kept up to date on what is happening on the ground in Haiti. Social media has become our main form of communication with our donors to share stories and raise money to fund our programs. We have a very active social media calendar with multiple campaigns throughout the year and several monthly newsletters and emails to plan and design. 

 

As a Social Media Marketing intern for Middle Ground, you will get to have your hands in multiple exciting projects that make a direct and lasting impact on the lives of the children and families we work withs. Although the day-to-day work you will do does not take place on the ground in Haiti, the result of this role is truly the backbone of our ability to fund and run our programs. It is only with the support that comes from a strong and engaging social media presence thatwe can offer programs that truly save lives and change the future of countless children and their families in Haiti.

As a Social Media Marketing intern, you will work closely with our staff in Haiti to create social media content that shares the stories of children and families in our programs. You will also have a role in planning and gathering information for newsletters, and assisting in brainstorming and executing new and exciting fundraising initiatives. Each box weighs around 30 lbs and typically can fit in the backseat of a sedan and trunk. Orientation required.

Volunteer: Body Safety Training Facilitator - Long Term

We are looking for a volunteer presenter that is willing to work with us long term. Our current staff member is going on maternity leave at the end of April, and we would love to have someone to help coordinate and fill in the gaps with presentations.

You will be giving presentations to children ages 3 yrs old through 2nd grade, on safety, including personal safety in a short (15 min) program over a series of 10 days.

Must be available days and be willing to submit to a background check. Flexible hours - approx. 5-10 hours a week (dependent on the schools’ schedules), but for each group of children you are presenting the program to, you must be able to commit to 10 consecutive days. We serve several schools and preschools throughout the year. You do not have to commit to being the presenter for all of these, but we would like you to be able to present to a least one school a year. We will provide you with the necessary training, materials, and support to provide this program.

You will be giving presentations to children ages 3 yrs old through 2nd grade, on safety, including personal safety in a short (15 min) program over a series of 10 days.

Must be available days and be willing to submit to a background check. Flexible hours - approx. 5-10 hours a week (dependent on the schools’ schedules), but for each group of children you are presenting the program to, you must be able to commit to 10 consecutive days. We serve several schools and preschools throughout the year. You do not have to commit to being the presenter for all of these, but we would like you to be able to present to a least one school a year. We will provide you with the necessary training, materials, and support to provide this program.

Volunteer: Mentoring: Youth Aging Out of Foster Care

Our House is building a unique, integrated model to support youth typically lacking the experience of growing up with significant adults in their lives. Through individual and group mentoring, life skills training, camp retreats, employment training, and supportive housing options, Our House builds upon each component to help assure successful outcomes as youth transition to adulthood.

Our Mentors are instrumental in fulfilling Our House’s goal of propelling youth to reach their full potential and equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to function independently and contribute to society. They must possess a sincere desire to be personally involved with another person to help him or her achieve personal and career goals. Mentors will develop supportive relationships with foster care youth participating in the Our House programs and aid them through emotional support and social and recreational development. The Mentor provides caring companionship to supplement the work of parents, teachers, counselors, social workers and other social services and education professionals. 

Each Mentor will be provided with initial training before working with youth and ongoing support throughout the program. The average Mentor will put in approximately 6 to 12 hours each month in services to our youth. This commitment may come in larger or smaller doses, but the Mentor must be consistent. While Mentors may serve longer than one year, the minimum expectation of any Mentor will be one year.
