Volunteer: Help With After School Art Classes

About us
Doodles Academy is a national arts non-profit dedicated to ensuring all kids, regardless of their background, have access to high-quality arts curricula. We work to close the opportunity gap by providing a powerful art curriculum, either at low cost or for free, to schools and communities that may otherwise not be able to afford it.

We believe in using curriculum to create change, and thus we offer exceptional visual art curricula that provides outlets for young learners to develop and express their individuality while expanding their knowledge of the world and the diverse group of people they share it with. Within our projects we offer resources to connect literacy and social studies content, often offer video tutorials, and connect to contemporary as well as classic artworks. This increases the perceived value of art education and encourages use by schools that might not value art for art's sake.

We design our impactful lessons for educators of all backgrounds, even those who are not formally trained art teachers, to ensure that this art program is accessible even to schools without an established art program or teacher.

Our 'home-base' is in Ann Arbor, where we develop and test curricula in workshops and classes.

Description:
We are seeking multiple volunteers to assist our lead teachers in a district-wide art program.

Volunteers will be matched with the lead teacher and support the after-school programming on our last week of class. This opportunity is to help teachers on the final day of class. Most schools end the week of May 20th, but exact end dates vary depending on the school times are from 3:30-5:30.

Volunteers will assist the lead teacher by recording student testimonials of the final day of camp. The teacher may also have volunteers take photographs and/or help with supply distribution clean up as needed. Volunteers will work directly with students, helping them to realize and document their unique creative vision.

Spring After School Curriculum: Animal ARTventures
Explore how science and art beautifully intertwine. Embark on a journey of scientific and artistic discovery, starting with field sketches to master the art of observation, just like a scientist. Study an animal's habits and habitat, and use these insights to make some incredible drawings of your animal. Finally, transform your drawings into stunning watercolor masterpieces. Join us on this thrilling adventure to explore the wonders of the natural world and the exciting overlap between art and science! Instructor: Doodles Academy staff.

1st-5th grade

Requirements: All volunteers would need to have a background check run with the AAPS.

If your organization is available and interested please reach out to us here!

Volunteer: Be a virtual reading tutor - support young students' path toward reading proficiency in Detroit

Reading is the foundation for all learning, and yet 60 percent of Detroit children under five live in poverty, with the majority of kids not ready for kindergarten. By third grade, only 14 percent read at grade level.

We know that, given the opportunity, students who are behind can and will excel in reading. That’s why Reading Partners and Brilliant Detroit are working together to harness the power of community to provide students with access to high-quality learning opportunities. Are you ready to help a student become a lifelong learner?

Volunteer roles & responsibilities:

Give as little as one hour per week to provide critical literacy support to a Detroit student. Volunteer from the comfort of your own home -- you will be connecting with your student virtually through our online Reading Partners Connects platform! A laptop or desktop computer and reliable wifi are required. Volunteering takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 pm to 6 pm. Volunteers can choose one or two days per week to volunteer! Anyone 14+ can volunteer, and all volunteers 18+ must pass a background check. No experience is required, as we provide volunteers with a structured curriculum, training, and ongoing support to help you and your student succeed.

Volunteer: Animal Shelter Volunteer

Barn Sanctuary is always looking for volunteers to help us at the shelter. We rely on passionate, dedicated, and talented people for so much of what we do. Volunteering at Barn Sanctuary is a truly rewarding experience; you will have the rare and unique opportunity to get to know our resident animals and participate in work that makes a difference. Volunteering at Barn Sanctuary also provides valuable experience for those pursuing careers or passions in the animal care and protection arena.

Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities

The bulk of volunteer responsibilities consist of physical chores. Volunteers will be responsible for mucking out stalls/pens, yards, and pastures; laying clean bedding in living areas; scrubbing and refilling water buckets; restocking hay, straw, and wood shavings; and keeping each building generally clean and well-maintained.   The animals require care every day of the year, regardless of the weather and they rely on committed volunteers to be there for them. Similarly, the Shelter team is reliant upon committed volunteers to assist with tackling chores around the property rain or shine.

Volunteers complete 2 Orientations before signing up for regular shifts We ask volunteers to commit to a minimum of 2 shifts per month, for a minimum of 2 hours per shift or more (preferably regular, weekly shifts). Volunteers MUST be 18 and older to attend alone. Volunteers 14+ are permitted but must be accompanied by a parent or caretaker at all times.

Volunteer: Host a Brilliant Back to School Donation Drive

Education is a key part of our work at Brilliant Detroit. Academic support is part of setting kids up for success, as is making sure they have the right tools and resources. To make sure our families are ready to begin the school year, we gather in August at each hub to pass out important educational and health information, give out backpacks and other school supplies, and have some fun. Volunteers support this important event by collecting backpacks, school supplies, and coming out to the hubs to help with various activities at the school readiness fair. We are currently collecting backpacks and school supplies for this signature volunteer event.   We are asking that volunteers donate school supplies and/or empty or pre-filled backpacks. When responding to this post, please let us know what you would like to contribute to our efforts. Volunteer: Bilingual Story Time Help

We put on a story time program for children ages 2-5 and their caregivers once a week.  During story time we provide sensory play, do read-alouds, go on a tour of the shelter, and meet an animal.  We know that there are many members of our community who do not speak English as a first language, so we are looking to offer a bilingual story time to include more people in our community.

We are looking for volunteers who are fluent in a language other than English who can help us run a bilingual story time!  HSHV staff would plan the activities and take care of registration.  The volunteer would need to:

Do some basic translations for activities and advertising Read two stories out loud to story time participants Do some interpretation during the program

We are open to offering bilingual story time in any language, but we are particularly interested in finding volunteers who are fluent in:

Spanish Korean Arabic Hindi

Part of this volunteer role would include working on translations independently on your own time.  The other part would require being present on the day of the program to read stories and interpret.  We typically hold bilingual story time on a Saturday morning from 10:30-11:30 a.m.  Volunteers should be fluent in a language other than English, be comfortable around animals, and, of course, like children!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Director of Humane Education and Community Engagement, Jessie Hitt at jessieh@hshv.org.

Volunteer: Scour Facebook Marketplace for Needed Items for Arriving Refugees!

When a refugee client needs something that is not in our inventory of donated items, our Resource Team will reach out to people offering those items on Facebook Marketplace. While we have had decent success with this, it is very time consuming. We could use an extra set of eyes!

This volunteer would work closely with staff to look for available items on Marketplace and make initial contact with potential donors. Staff will provide a list of high-priority items, as well as a script for reaching out to sellers. Staff will also coach the volunteer on our guidelines for what items we can and cannot accept.

If you are interested in serving in this capacity, please respond to this posting for more details!

As one of the largest refugee resettlement agencies in the state, Samaritas has resettled thousands of people from dozens of countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Central and South America. Samaritas has been the Michigan affiliate of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service since the 1950s. Volunteer: Volunteer Needed to Help Sell Items Online

IVC receives a lot of generous donations of items that we utilize as raffle prizes and in silent auction baskets for our fundraising events. However, some items we receive may not be a good fit for either of these purposes, so we are in need of someone to volunteer some of their time to help post some of the items on a selling site like eBay or Facebook marketplace. Volunteer would need to have knowledge of these sites, be able to create an accurate description of the item, and be able to look up the fair market value of the items so to post at a fair price. Proceeds received for items will be used as donations to help grow our program.

Volunteer: Virtual Literacy Mentor for Center for Success Network

Volunteer mentors are the foundation of Center for Success Network. Volunteers are asked to attend a 90-minute mentor training, complete a volunteer application that includes a background check, and participate in a 2-hour Mentoring for Equity Workshop.  Mentors are then paired with a student from one of our 12 locations across Southeast Michigan. Mentors are currently virtual only and are given all the resources they’ll need to run a successful session with their student.  Mentoring sessions take place on zoom and are 30 - 45 minutes long and include 4 parts - energize and goal setting, reading a book, literacy activity, and closing and reflection. Experienced staff from Center for Success Network host sessions and provide assistance and support during and after sessions to accommodate every mentor.

There are two ways to mentor - consistently or and as a substitute. As a consistent mentor, we would pair you with a student, so you meet with the same student each week.  As a substitute, you would mentor on a periodic basis with various students as your schedule allows and as need arises - like if a student's mentor was sick and you indicated you may be available, we would reach out to see if you could mentor that session!

Program starts October 2023 and goes until May 2024  If you are interested in becoming a virtual mentor, please fill out this volunteer form here or if you have questions please email volunteer@center4success.org

Volunteer: Virtual Visits with Seniors

Conversations to Remember is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated towards combating loneliness and isolation felt by senior citizens. Our virtual visit program matches 2-3 college students with residents of long-term care, assisted living, and memory care communities for virtual video visits. These residents have been suffering from isolation, and you could really brighten their days just by speaking with them. We provide training about the best ways to interact with the seniors, as well as additional support throughout our volunteers' service. Since these visits are virtual, you can do it without any travel. This is both convenient, and allows more time to be spent volunteering, rather than commuting to the volunteering location. We provide this program free of charge to seniors across the country, and have students from around the country as well.

Typically, students volunteer 1-2 hours per week. Each call lasts up to one hour, based on the senior's attention span and mood on each day. We expect students to volunteer for approximately 16 weeks, so that they can build a friendship with the senior. This does not need to coincide with the start of a semester, as we have new seniors starting all the time, and train new volunteers weekly. The students are matched based on the times that they're available, with a senior who is available at the same time, and they will have a regular, weekly appointment for their visit. Students wishing for more visits or other opportunities that allow them to volunteer more hours can be accommodated with different ways to volunteer, such as assisting us with our social media, call support, or outreach.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions that you have about the program, or to look through our website, at https://conversationstoremember.org. Your students can register to volunteer by filling out a volunteer interest form on our website. If you'd like a flyer to tell your students about us, you can find one here.

Volunteer: Become a Wayne County CASA Volunteer! Make a Difference in a Child's Life!

Wayne County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) provides a voice for abused and neglected children in Juvenile Court proceedings through highly trained community volunteers. We believe every child in Wayne County deserves a safe and permanent home, where they can thrive. And we believe every child should have the opportunity to grow and develop into a contributing member of our community.

CASA volunteer advocates are ordinary people, just like you, with an extraordinary desire to help children. After completing a CASA training course, CASA volunteers are appointed by a jurist to one case involving a child or set of siblings who have experienced abuse and neglect, and placed in the foster care system. A CASA volunteer gathers information to help identify the child’s needs, present written reports at court hearings, help the child understand court proceedings, recommend services and more—all to help the judge make the best decisions to guide the child out of the foster care system and into a safe, permanent home. CASA volunteers must be 21 years or older, pass an extensive screening and background check, and have the ability to commit 10-20 hours a month to the case.

At Wayne County CASA, we are making a difference one child at a time! Will you join us?
We are currently accepting volunteer applications for our summer training class!

Volunteer: Hope Not Handcuffs Angel

What Is It?

Hope Not Handcuffs is an initiative started by Families Against Narcotics (FAN), aimed at bringing law enforcement and community organizations together in an effort to find viable treatment options for individuals seeking help to reduce dependency with heroin, prescription drugs, and alcohol. It is a solution.

How It Works

A person struggling with any substance use disorder can come to any of the participating police agencies and ask for help. They will be greeted with support, compassion, and respect. If accepted into the program*, the individual will be guided through a brief intake process to ensure proper treatment placement.

If a person is uninsured or has Medicaid, we will work directly with the local Office of Substance Abuse Services for placement. If a person has private insurance, we will provide them with treatment options covered by their plan. Regardless, our team will work to get them into treatment as soon as possible. We have more than 600 volunteer Angels, and one of them will help with paperwork and provide compassionate support until a treatment option is found.

BECOME AN ANGEL

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Hope Not Handcuffs team, please complete the following information and we will be in contact shortly.

Questions: 833-202-HOPE (4673) or kiml@familiesagainstnarcotics.org

* If you are currently in recovery, please list your sobriety date and what programs you are working to maintain your sobriety under the Special Skills or Qualifications section.  Any applicants under two years will be carefully reviewed by the Hope Not Handcuffs Committee.  Thank you for your understanding.
