The Reception Volunteer will work side-by-side with the Office Manager to ensure things at HAVEN run smoothly for clients, community partners, and staff. HAVEN’s Prevention Education (PE) team is looking for dedicated volunteers to join us in delivering meaningful programs and events. Volunteers may choose one or multiple roles based on their interests and availability, and these roles may adapt if needed.

1. Facilitate K–12 School-Based Programming

Deliver interactive, age-appropriate lessons on body safety, healthy relationships, and violence prevention to youth from Kindergarten to high school. Receive training on our established curricula and always attend presentations accompanied by HAVEN staff. Requires weekday availability during school hours from approximately October – April.

2. Co-Facilitate Professional Trainings

Support trainings for systems professionals and workplaces on topics such as screening for intimate partner and sexual violence, supporting survivors, and building safe workplaces. Receive training on established HAVEN curricula and always be paired with HAVEN staff as co-facilitators. Requires primarily weekday availability, with occasional evening or weekend events.

3. Prevention Education Administrative Support

Assist behind the scenes with essential tasks such as data entry and maintaining program files. Create and test program evaluations to track changes in audience awareness and attitudes. Assist with creating and maintaining research tables to inform HAVEN’s programming. Flexible scheduling available.

4. Summer Camp Counselor

Serve as a counselor for our 4-day summer day camp, offered to our clients’ children. Play games, chaperone field trips, and coordinate efforts with volunteer groups providing programming. We are looking for volunteers who are excited about working with kids and supporting literacy in Detroit to lead reading cohorts at our hubs. Brilliant Detroit is excited to partner with Reading is Fundamental (RIF) and Raising a Reader (RaR) to offer literacy enrichment programming at our sites!

As a volunteer leader, you would come in-person to one of our sites to lead an hour-long program once a week from October to May. 

Volunteers will be partnered with a child and be tasked to read aloud books and lead activities based on those books with that child. This opportunity is best suited for those with early childhood education experience and/or interest, however, anyone can lead these programs. These programs work best when the facilitator is upbeat, energetic, compassionate, and engaging.

These programs are offered in person at hubs based on the volunteer's availability. Volunteers will be placed based on the needs of our hubs and the volunteer's proximity to one of our Brilliant pods.

If you are interested in making a palpable difference in the life of a child, this is an opportunity which we believe you will find quite rewarding. 

The Family Learning Institute (FLI) is seeking adult tutors to work one to one in reading with an student assigned them for the year.  The program works with second through fifth grade students from Erickson and Holmes Schools in Ypsilanti who are a year or more behind grade level in reading, and referred by their teachers.  

Tutors receive training in teaching reading and are provided a lesson each week by a reading specialist. The lessons provide intensive  instruction and practice  in phonics and word recognition.  This tutoring program differs from many other volunteer-based reading programs in that tutors do not just read with students, but provide instruction to students, with the goal of student mastery of foundational skills and independence in reading. 

Once a week, hour-long tutoring can be either in-person at Holmes or Erickson schools before the start of the school day, or virtual, with on-line Zoom meetings during late afternoons. All lessons are provided tutors by the tutoring director.  

Tutoring takes place for an entire academic year, generally beginning in October and ending at the end of  May.  Some students are also referred to the program later in the school year, so some tutors begin tutoring after October. Tutors can chose from a number of options for day and time of tutoring. 

Before-school in-person tutoring tutoring takes place Mondays at 8:15 (at Erickson) or Tuesdays at 8:00 (at Holmes). Virtual tutoring takes place Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays after school, from either 5:30-6:30, or 6:30-7:30.  

Tutors receive preliminary training and ongoing support through the school year.

Volunteer: Share Your Love Of Nature As A Marine Environmental Educator


To further its mission of environmental stewardship, the Coast Guard needs environmental educators to speak to community groups, public events, schools, and museums to improve public knowledge about human-caused threats to marine life on the Great Lakes and connected waterways. As an environmental educator, you will deliver presentations about environmental laws, marine safety, aquatic invasive species, fishing debris, illegal dumping, and boating’s impact on the environment and participate in relevant events such as beach cleanups or boating fairs. A primary focus is maritime pollution prevention and outreach about environmental laws, however within this area educators specialize in venues, topics, and audiences that interest them and may speak to adults, children, or both. Presentations can be made in teams or (after training) as a solo instructor operating independently, or educators can staff booths at public events. 


Benefits

This opportunity provides professional training relevant to teaching and maritime careers and will provide a boating license (in Michigan, called a boater education card). Working at a federal agency can be helpful for future government careers. You can achieve certifications in many areas, including teaching and leadership, that can be used on your resume. Successful participants are eligible for internships that offer course credit. You will receive insurance coverage and liability protection while volunteering. You will receive base exchange shopping privileges in Detroit and online. Training will be provided at no cost.


Qualifications

You must be comfortable interacting with the public and be a confident public speaker. No prior experience is necessary, but prior coursework in environmental science will allow you to progress through training more quickly, or skip some training. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is a uniformed service – you must be willing to acquire and wear a uniform in a professional manner. As many different tasks are available, your physical ability usually does not limit participation. If you incur expenses to volunteer (such as travel, uniforms, or meals if necessary) these are not usually reimbursed by the Coast Guard. US citizenship is required. 


Timing

You can set your own hours and location by scheduling and accepting speaking engagements at locations and times convenient to you, except for check-in/training meetings usually held Wednesdays at 7pm (these meetings can be done via Zoom). Almost all required training and mentoring can be completed online, but outreach presentations must be in-person.


Process

Due to the training provided, this is a long-term opportunity. Initial training generally takes at least six months and includes a background check. If you express an interest you will be invited to visit a meeting as a guest and to discuss your interests and availability.


Note: This is a volunteer service opportunity, not an ROTC program. There is no legal service obligation. No college scholarships are available. The Coast Guard Auxiliary does not perform military or law enforcement missions.

To further its mission of environmental stewardship, the Coast Guard needs environmental educators to speak to community groups, public events, schools, and museums to improve public knowledge about human-caused threats to marine life on the Great Lakes and connected waterways. As an environmental educator, you will deliver presentations about environmental laws, marine safety, aquatic invasive species, fishing debris, illegal dumping, and boating’s impact on the environment and participate in relevant events such as beach cleanups or boating fairs. A primary focus is maritime pollution prevention and outreach about environmental laws, however within this area educators specialize in venues, topics, and audiences that interest them and may speak to adults, children, or both. Presentations can be made in teams or (after training) as a solo instructor operating independently, or educators can staff booths at public events.

We’re recruiting Virtual and In-Person Literacy Mentors!

Our Mentor Family is the foundation of our organization. Our team works closely alongside you to ensure that we support the bright futures of our students. The Center for Success Network is looking for people who love children and have a willingness to share time and joy with our staff and students as a virtual literacy mentor.

Requirements:
- 90 Minute Training Session
- 2-hour virtual Mentoring for Equity workshop
- Minimum commitment of one session weekly through the full program year
- Service commitment through the entire Academic School Year (October- May)
- A Background Check
- High School Juniors and Seniors are also eligible to become mentors, but must have 2 non-family references

Sessions are literacy focused and include time to build relationships with their students. Mentoring sessions will be 30-45 minutes long for virtual sessions and 1 hour for in-person sessions. These sessions will include 4 parts: energize and goal setting, reading a book, literacy activity, and closing and reflection. Volunteer: Volunteers Tutors needed to assist ESL learners in Western Wayne County

You can help!  The Community Literacy Council, a non-profit organization, needs adult volunteers to help adult English language learners in Western Wayne County who have limited English language abilities.  Most of our tutors work one-on-one with learners to help them develop vital reading, writing, and communication skills.  Tutor training sessions are available three times a year.  Tutors are able to pick their learners and tutor locations although typically tutoring takes place in public libraries.  You too can make a difference in the life of an English language learner!

The Child Safe Michigan Mentoring Program is one of the only successful year-long programs in the state of Michigan that is dedicated primarily to youth with lived foster care experience ages 14-23. Not only do youth with lived foster care experience deal with age-appropriate issues facing youth today, but they also have to face being separated from their biological family, residing in new homes, and attending new schools all while dealing with the abuse and/or neglect that led to their placement in the foster care system.


The Mentoring Program requires at least a one-year commitment where the mentor and mentee meet two to four times per month within the community. Mentors must be at 21 years old. Once someone has decided to take the steps to becoming a mentor, they will be sent a packet of materials including an application and background check authorizations. They will be asked to provide contact information for three personal references who can attest to your character and appropriateness in mentoring a youth. Along with completing the application packet, they will participate in an interview with one of the Mentoring Program staff as a means of learning about their hobbies and interests to best match them with a mentee. This interview also allows an opportunity for them to ask questions they may have about the mentoring experience. As a final step of the application process, they will be invited to attend a six-hour New Mentor Orientation; this training is typically held on a Saturday and is conducted either in-person or virtually every three months.

Learn about the current state of food, environmental, and relevant policies such as the FISCAL Act, the Farm Bill, and other local bills. Then, write a letter to the editor responding to a published article about one of these bills or an op-ed sharing your viewpoint more generally about these policy proposals. Attempt to get your piece published in a school newspaper, a local outlet, or even a regional or national one!

Research and identify potential topics within the broader topic of food choices and environment that are relevant to current legislation or recent articles published in the local press. Who we're looking for:

Advocates for strong communities with extensive experience in finance and non-profit spaces. As we grow this organization from the ground up, we’re seeking leadership in strategic plan and fund development projects. 

Who we are:

We are a mental health recovery program for adults with serious mental illness. Previously we were operated by a parent agency but we are separating from them to become an independent agency to be able to serve a larger population.

We have a strong, evidence-based program accredited by Clubhouse International, great working relationship with Washtenaw County Community Mental Health, Michigan Dept. of Health and Human Services, and a dedicated staff. We are seeking volunteers to join our board of directors and provide support in capacity building, strategic planning, and development. Specifically, we are in need of volunteers about to actively support with grant development in order to diversify funding and uphold our mission.

Volunteer: Income Tax Greeter or Preparer

Wayne Metro is recuiting two Volunteer positions for Income Tax Preparation. Both are at locations across Wayne County.

Greeter: Provide a welcoming greeting to tax prepartion clients and check to make sure they have needed documents. Maintain client confidentiality. Time Commitment: 12 hours Total (6 hour training required + 6 hour minimum time volunteering).

Tax Preparer: Provide Taxpayers with accurate, quality Tax Prep services as part of a team. All forms completed will undergo a multi-step review by Wayne Metro employees. Maintain client confidentiality. Time commitment: 24 hours Total (6 hour training, 6 hour IRS Certification training, and 12 hour minimum time volunteering).

Our wonderful Walter White Community Resource Center's Clothing Closet is in dire need of volunteers to manage donations. In addition to individual volunteers, we welcome corporate groups, church groups, book clubs and groups of all sizes.
