Love moving your body? Meeting new people? Are you interested in assisting in the upgrades of a community garden in Ypsilanti? Are you curious about the process that goes into wooden bed construction and planning? This event is for you!
Towne Centre Place (401 W Michigan Ave) is an income based, senior apartment complex less than a mile away from the Growing Hope urban site. For years, the residents have been heavily gardening in 40 garden beds. Untreated wood rots eventually and these beds are due for replacement! This project will require a series of volunteer events to complete it. Come be a part of the first event!
What to expect:
shoveling dirt, moving shoveled dirt in wheelbarrows, breaking apart rotten wood, and moving old wood into a truck trailer for disposal.
Weather:
It still is very cold out, so please dress prepared! We will provide gardening gloves, but dressing in layers is essential for you to be comfortable. We will be moving our bodies a lot and it is likely that you will be warm enough to want to remove a layer or two. However, we all know that is highly preferred over being too cold. Warm boots are also recommended.
Tools:
We will provide everything we will need but the more the merrier. If you have any tools you see fit for demolishing wooden beds, please bring them. Examples- hammers, pry bars, crowbars, saw, etc.
