Volunteer: Children's Grief Support Group Facilitator

Ele's Place is a warm and welcoming environment that serves as a community resource for children and their families to receive grief support. Children and families learn coping skills, process their grief, and receive peer support by being around others who really understand how they feel.

The children who participate in these groups range in age from 3 - 18. They come from a variety of backgrounds and circumstances, but all are grieving the death of a parent, sibling, or other loved one. Through the Ele's Place peer support group program, these children have the opportunity to grieve in a healthy manner and learn how to cope with the many challenges and changes in their lives following their loss.

Ele’s Place relies on volunteers to offer these services at no cost to families. We are seeking interested, kind and compassionate adults who want to make a difference in our community. We offer an in-depth and interactive training for all volunteers, so no prior experience is necessary. We welcome people from all backgrounds, and have a particular need for bilingual individuals and male volunteers.

To review more about our volunteer opportunities, please visit: https://www.elesplace.org/branch-locations/ann-arbor/volunteer

If you have questions, please contact Aysia Rodriguez, LLMSW 734-929-6640 x2207 or arodriguez@elesplace.org.

Volunteer: Card and Personal Care Pantry Donations

We welcome any quantity of non-religious cards or placemats with messages of encouragement/thinking of you, with examples below. We appreciate if cards come without envelopes and are unsigned (we add a note that they are from a caring community member). Once received, they will be sent out to clients with their meal deliveries.

Due to the diversity of our clientele, Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels typically steers away from phrases such as "I love you, you are loved, hugs, kisses, etc." on cards/placemats. Sentiments of kindness, care, positive humor, and joy are welcomed and appreciated!

Example sentiments:

Have a nice day!

May your day be filled with joy.

Sending you warm and caring wishes.

Hope you have a wonderful day!

Your community cares about you!

Hope this card brings a smile to your face.

I hope you have a great day!

Here is a card to help bring sunshine to your day.

Thinking of you.

Volunteer: Save Lives On The Water In Search and Rescue

Coast Guard search and rescue operations locate people in danger and return them to safety. The Coast Guard is the lead federal agency for search and rescue response over water; it needs auxiliary volunteers to supplement its operations. The Coast Guard responds to about 20,000 search and rescue cases each year, saving 3,500 lives using assets that include 2 air stations and 13 small boat stations in Michigan. As a search and rescue volunteer, you train and patrol on boats and/or you staff a communications center or rescue coordination center to prepare for and organize emergency response. You will learn about boat handling, rescue, marine survival, navigation, towing, radio communications, and to plan and execute search patterns. Most activities are not on-call and have a predictable schedule. Training is provided on campus at the University of Michigan; travel to a boat or station is also required, but can be coordinated with other volunteers.

Benefits

This opportunity provides professional training relevant to maritime careers and/or boating, and will provide a boating license (in Michigan, called a boater education card). Working at a federal agency can be helpful for future government careers. You can achieve certifications in many areas, including leadership, that can be used on your resume. Successful participants are eligible for internships that offer course credit. You will receive insurance coverage and liability protection while volunteering. You will receive base exchange shopping privileges in Detroit and online. Training will be provided at no cost.

Qualifications

No prior experience is necessary. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is a uniformed service – you must be willing to acquire and wear a uniform in a professional manner. As many tasks are available, your physical ability usually does not limit participation. If you incur expenses to volunteer (such as travel, uniforms, or meals if necessary) these are not usually reimbursed by the Coast Guard. US citizenship is required.

Timing

Your hours and locations are varied and can be flexible, except for check-in/training meetings usually held Wednesdays at 7pm (these meetings can be done via Zoom). It is not necessary to serve on a boat; this job includes important work in a variety of settings. However, if you choose to participate in boating this typically requires one weekend (usually in June) of additional training per year. Office and communication center positions are more flexible.

Process

Due to the training provided, this is a long-term opportunity. Initial training generally takes at least six months and includes a background check. If you express an interest you will be invited to visit a meeting as a guest and to discuss your interests and availability.

Note: This is a volunteer service opportunity, not an ROTC program. There is no legal service obligation. No college scholarships are available. The Coast Guard Auxiliary does not perform military or law enforcement missions.

Volunteer: Certified Medical Interpreters at Hope Clinic

Hope Clinic is working to reduce barriers to care for uninsured patients—and language access is a key part of that. We're building a list of interpreters we can call on when needed.

Top need: Spanish Other languages: Arabic, Dari, Pashto, French, Albanian, Korean, and more Summer availability especially helpful (when interns are away)

If you're fluent in any of these languages and willing to help, please:

Volunteer: Practical Recipes on Campus

Overview: Learn about the benefits of a plant-based diet for environmental and social justice. Then, share this information with your peers by creating examples of balanced meals that are affordable, accessible, and able to be prepared in a dorm environment. Research and communicate the resources and emissions saved from making the recipe plant-based rather than animal-product-inclusive.

Learning objectives:

Improve understanding of animal agriculture’s effects on climate, pollution, and biodiversity loss. Improve reading comprehension skills for scientific papers and learn to clearly communicate findings with a non-scientific audience. Quantify the impact of eliminating animal products from one’s diet on planetary health. Be able to discuss the relationship between food and the environment with peers and offer practical suggestions for transitioning to a more plant-forward diet. Gain effective communication skills that enable you to critically engage with this topic with varying audiences, including your peers and the public, such as active listening and asking critical questions. Learn about skills and competencies required in culinary and environmental science professions, such as recipe creation and environmental impact analysis.

Stages:

Investigation

Survey the selected audience (i.e. dorm neighbors, sports team, or those who share an academic focus) to understand their considerations when choosing their food.

Preparation and Planning

Research the connection between food and environment independently and with the support of Switch4Good materials and team.Reflect on survey results to determine the standards that each recipe must meet, including cost, ease of buying ingredients, and cooking method.Brainstorm at least ten different plant-based recipes that are affordable, accessible, and practical for the audience to cook. Each recipe should be for a balanced, nutritious meal that includes fruits and vegetables, complex carbohydrates, and protein. Calculate the environmental savings of each recipe compared to a similar recipe that includes animal products.

Action/Demonstration

Prepare and distribute recipes (i.e., live cooking demonstration, printed handouts, video, etc.) and communicate environmental benefits.

Deliverables:

Survey distributed to the audience asking about preferences, restraints, etc. 10 plant-based recipes that fit the needs of the audienceDocumentation of the presentation of the recipes (i.e., video recording, handouts, etc.)

Volunteer: Lobby Runner at Hope Clinic

Hope Clinic offers free, whole-person healthcare to those without insurance, and we need folks to be there for them when they walk in the door!

Lobby Runners help with a variety of tasks at our Ypsilanti location, including:  check-in volunteers; receive/organize drop-off donations and deliveries that flow in to us throughout the day from generous donors; helping the Front Desk team with varied tasks/projects as needed.

Volunteer: Virtual Visits with Seniors

Conversations to Remember is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated towards combating loneliness and isolation felt by senior citizens. Our virtual visit program matches 2-3 college students with residents of long-term care, assisted living, and memory care communities for virtual video visits. These residents have been suffering from isolation, and you could really brighten their days just by speaking with them. We provide training about the best ways to interact with the seniors, as well as additional support throughout our volunteers' service. Since these visits are virtual, you can do it without any travel. This is both convenient, and allows more time to be spent volunteering, rather than commuting to the volunteering location. We provide this program free of charge to seniors across the country, and have students from around the country as well.

Typically, students volunteer 1-2 hours per week. Each call lasts up to one hour, based on the senior's attention span and mood on each day. We expect students to volunteer for approximately 16 weeks, so that they can build a friendship with the senior. This does not need to coincide with the start of a semester, as we have new seniors starting all the time, and train new volunteers weekly. The students are matched based on the times that they're available, with a senior who is available at the same time, and they will have a regular, weekly appointment for their visit. Students wishing for more visits or other opportunities that allow them to volunteer more hours can be accommodated with different ways to volunteer, such as assisting us with our social media, call support, or outreach.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions that you have about the program, or to look through our website, at https://conversationstoremember.org. Your students can register to volunteer by filling out a volunteer interest form on our website. If you'd like a flyer to tell your students about us, you can find one here.
