Volunteer: 2025-2026 In-Person Reading Mentor (BookPALS)--Detroit

Children's Literacy Network's in-person BookPALS program is continuing during the 2025-2026 school year in Detroit! The program will share the joy of reading and encouragement of reading confidence with local 2nd grade students while practicing crucial literacy skills. The highly-loved program is in need of volunteers that are available during the school day for in-person volunteering at local elementary schools. All books and resources are provided, we just need YOU! We are looking for volunteers who are interested in volunteering in Detroit on Mondays-Thursdays during the school day. If you are looking for an opportunity to volunteer for 1-2 hours during the work day, or have time to give during the week, this could be the perfect opportunity for you! Training is provided and no experience is necessary, just a kind heart, love of reading, and open mind.

Children's Literacy Network's provides a remote volunteering opportunity with our program, Virtual BookPALS. The program was designed to bring students together from different socio-economic backgrounds and build a love of reading through new friendships! We partner with schools from Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and Detroit.
We are in need of volunteers who are interested in serving as weekly remote reading mentors to 2nd and 3rd grade students. Please continue reading for more information on the volunteering experience of BookPALS.

Volunteers for BookPALS serve as reading mentors to small groups of around 1-3 second graders to motivate and encourage excitement around reading on Zoom! Reading mentors work with the same students each week to encourage building a positive relationship with reading. All books, resources and trainings are provided, all we need is you and your dedicated time! Mentor readers read with students, share in fun reading activities, and help them build crucial literacy skills. Current opportunities include sessions on Monday and Tuesday from 5:00-6:00PM and 6:00-7:00PM Volunteers are only required to sign up for ONE weekly hour-long sessions, but can choose more if desired. Volunteers are asked to commit to volunteering on a weekly basis for at least one semester.

Children's Literacy Network's Family Literacy Interactive Program (FLIP) Night is an interactive, family-oriented literacy night held at our partner schools throughout Washtenaw county. FLIP Nights provide families with the opportunity to build literacy skills and enjoy a fun evening together by offering important components: interactive literacy-based activities for children and their families, breakout workshop for parents and caregivers to help them support their child's literacy development, STEM activities, power food packs and dinner, and books for children of all ages.

We are currently looking for individuals or groups that would be interested in volunteering for our 2025-2026 FLIP Nights (dates to be announced).

Volunteers for FLIP run interactive literacy activities for participating families, work the welcome table, help with dinner, and pass out books throughout the night. We hold FLIP nights at local Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor Elementary Schools. This volunteer experience can be a one-time commitment or ongoing, based on your preference. This opportunity is great for individuals, groups, teens and families! Events generally occur between 4:30-7:30PM.
