Volunteer: Read to a Child-Read Aloud Mentoring ProgramRead to a Child is a national literacy and mentoring non-profit that fosters a love of reading, improves literacy skills, and empowers underserved children by inspiring adults to read aloud to them regularly. Research shows that reading aloud to children is the single most important activity for eventual success in reading, a key factor for success in school, work, and life. When an adult reads aloud to a child, both parties have a joyful, rewarding experience that instills a love of reading, improves literacy skills, and enhances a child’s self-confidence. WHAT IS NEEDED? Volunteers are needed to serve as reading mentors for Kindergarten through fourth graders at local schools during their lunchtime. The goal is to instill a love of reading and provide social-emotional support. WHEN DOES THE PROGRAM TAKE PLACE? WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT? Mentors attend 30 minute reading sessions with their student once a week or every other week through the end of the school year. WHERE DOES THE PROGRAM TAKE PLACE? Volunteers participate in sessions at one of partner schools (https://readtoachild.org/locations/detroit/participating-schools-detroit/). HOW ARE THE CHILDREN SELECTED FOR THE PROGRAM? Teachers select specific students to participate in the Read Aloud Mentoring Program because they are 1) behind their age group in reading proficiency; 2) would benefit from the attention of a caring adult; 3) and/or English is their second language. I’VE NEVER BEEN A READING MENTOR. WILL I RECEIVE ANY TRAINING? Yes. All volunteers will attend an information and training session prior to beginning the program. ONCE I JOIN THE PROGRAM, WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE A QUESTION OR CAN’T MAKE IT TO MY SCHEDULED READING SESSION FOR THE WEEK? The Read Aloud Mentoring Program is well-managed by a Program Coordinator staffed at each site. If you have questions, or cannot make it to your reading session you can call the Program Coordinator to notify them and reschedule where possible. Volunteer: Reading TutorIf you are interested in making a palpable difference in the life of a child, this is an opportunity which we believe you will find quite rewarding. The Family Learning Institute (FLI) is seeking adult tutors to work one to one in reading with an student assigned them for the year. The program works with second through fifth grade students from Erickson and Holmes Schools in Ypsilanti who are a year or more behind grade level in reading, and referred by their teachers. Tutors receive training in teaching reading and are provided a lesson each week by a reading specialist. The lessons provide intensive instruction and practice in phonics and word recognition. This tutoring program differs from many other volunteer-based reading programs in that tutors do not just read with students, but provide instruction to students, with the goal of student mastery of foundational skills and independence in reading. Once a week, hour-long tutoring can be either in-person at Holmes or Erickson schools before the start of the school day, or virtual, with on-line Zoom meetings during late afternoons. All lessons are provided tutors by the tutoring director. Tutoring takes place for an entire academic year, generally beginning in October and ending at the end of May. Some students are also referred to the program later in the school year, so some tutors begin tutoring after October. Tutors can chose from a number of options for day and time of tutoring. Before-school in-person tutoring tutoring takes place Mondays at 8:15 (at Erickson) or Tuesdays at 8:00 (at Holmes). Virtual tutoring takes place Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays after school, from either 5:30-6:30, or 6:30-7:30. Tutors receive preliminary training and ongoing support through the school year. We ask that volunteers are U of M or other college graduates, U of M employees, or retirees. For more information, contact Caroline Nathans, FLI-Ypsilant Program director, at cfnathans@ameritech.net. We know that to ensure the future success of our region, we need to support our community’s children now. To celebrate Ann Arbor's bicentennial, United Way for Southeastern Michigan has set a goal to collect 200 books for organizations in Washtenaw county. Volunteer: Virtual Literacy Mentor for Center for Success NetworkVolunteer mentors are the foundation of Center for Success Network. Volunteers are asked to attend a 90-minute mentor training, complete a volunteer application that includes a background check, and participate in a 2-hour Mentoring for Equity Workshop. Mentors are then paired with a student from one of our 12 locations across Southeast Michigan. Mentors are currently virtual only and are given all the resources they’ll need to run a successful session with their student. Mentoring sessions take place on zoom and are 30 - 45 minutes long and include 4 parts - energize and goal setting, reading a book, literacy activity, and closing and reflection. Experienced staff from Center for Success Network host sessions and provide assistance and support during and after sessions to accommodate every mentor. There are two ways to mentor - consistently or and as a substitute. As a consistent mentor, we would pair you with a student, so you meet with the same student each week. As a substitute, you would mentor on a periodic basis with various students as your schedule allows and as need arises - like if a student's mentor was sick and you indicated you may be available, we would reach out to see if you could mentor that session! Program starts October 2023 and goes until May 2024 If you are interested in becoming a virtual mentor, please fill out this volunteer form here or if you have questions please email volunteer@center4success.org Volunteer Interest Form- https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeHSwvzv1_AOgMmol3AW659E6vRZJaF_YwUX88Cnj6dY3B98g/viewform?usp=sf_link Community Partner: Center for Success Network Volunteer mentors are the foundation of Center for Success Network. Volunteer: Virtual Visits with SeniorsConversations to Remember is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated towards combating loneliness and isolation felt by senior citizens. Our virtual visit program matches 2-3 college students with residents of long-term care, assisted living, and memory care communities for virtual video visits. These residents have been suffering from isolation, and you could really brighten their days just by speaking with them. We provide training about the best ways to interact with the seniors, as well as additional support throughout our volunteers' service. Since these visits are virtual, you can do it without any travel. This is both convenient, and allows more time to be spent volunteering, rather than commuting to the volunteering location. We provide this program free of charge to seniors across the country, and have students from around the country as well. Typically, students volunteer 1-2 hours per week. Each call lasts up to one hour, based on the senior's attention span and mood on each day. We expect students to volunteer for approximately 16 weeks, so that they can build a friendship with the senior. This does not need to coincide with the start of a semester, as we have new seniors starting all the time, and train new volunteers weekly. The students are matched based on the times that they're available, with a senior who is available at the same time, and they will have a regular, weekly appointment for their visit. Students wishing for more visits or other opportunities that allow them to volunteer more hours can be accommodated with different ways to volunteer, such as assisting us with our social media, call support, or outreach. Please feel free to contact me with any questions that you have about the program, or to look through our website, at https://conversationstoremember.org. Your students can register to volunteer by filling out a volunteer interest form on our website. If you'd like a flyer to tell your students about us, you can find one here.
