The Detroit Branch NAACP’s June Jubilee: A Celebration of Freedom is coming
June 22-25, 2023. This weekend of can’t miss events includes the Freedom Walk Summit and the 60th Commemorative Freedom Walk!
We encourage everyone to honor the historic 1963 Walk to Freedom. It was here in DETROIT, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. first delivered his iconic I Have A Dream speech. The Detroit Branch NAACP has a weekend of events to celebrate and honor the continuous quest for freedom.
Thursday, June 22nd
Freedom Walk Summit -Chaos Or Community: Where Do We Go From Here?
- Wayne County Community District Northwest Campus
- Denise-Wellons Glover Welcome Center
- 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
- Join Ayanna Gregory, Author and Entertainer; Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw, leading scholar of critical race theory; Dr. Michael Eric Dyson and more as we re-discover what Dr. King meant when he wrote his last book Chaos or Community: Where Do We Go From Here?
- Topics will include Voter Mobilization, Critical Race Theory – What It Is and What It Ain’t; The Civil Rights Movement and Labor; Closing The Wealth Gap Through Housing, and Equitable Access; Stopping The Violence through Community, Policy and Police.

- A special unveiling of a permanent statue of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Hart Plaza.

60TH COMMEMORATIVE FREEDOM WALK
- 10 a.m. Freedom Walk Step Off (Woodward & MLK)
- 12 p.m. Freedom Walk Rally (Hart Plaza)
- Spread the word, gather your orgs, faith centers, colleagues, family members and neighbors and let’s continue the commemoration of honoring a dream, and helping to implement a plan to bring equity and opportunity to all of America’s sons and daughters.

68th Annual Fight For Freedom Fund Dinner
- 5 p.m.

- Join us for the 68th Annual Fight For Freedom Fund Dinner where the Honorable U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock will serve as our Keynote Speaker. Senator Warnock is the first African American Senator from Georgia. Our awardees that evening will include: Ambassador Andrew Young; Michigan Supreme Court Justice Kyra H. Bolden; Michigan State Senator Stephanie Chang; Detroit Justice Center Managing Policy Counsel Erin Keith; and President of Organization of Exonerees Ken Nixon.
- The Freedom Summit and Freedom Walk are free and open to the public, but registration is needed.
