Who We Are
Mission: To develop innovative solutions for healthy people and a sustainable planet.
The Ecology Center is a nonprofit organization based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, dedicated to advancing a just and sustainable future. We combine research, hands-on experience, and collaborative partnerships to drive environmental awareness and action. Our vision is a world where individuals and communities live in harmony with nature, practicing sustainable development, promoting environmental justice, and valuing ecological integrity.
We work to inspire and empower people to advocate for effective environmental policies and practices through grassroots organizing, education, and demonstration projects. Our work is guided by a commitment to equity, scientific integrity, and community-based solutions.
What We Do
Founded after the first Earth Day in 1970, the Ecology Center leads regional efforts to create a healthier environment. Our major initiatives include:
- Climate and Energy, research and advocacy for energy efficiency and cleaner fuels, especially in transportation and power generation.
- Environmental Education, a program reaching 10,000 K-12 students and teachers in southeast Michigan every year.
- Environmental Health Project, working to protect our health from toxic chemicals in food, air, water, and household products.
- HealthyStuff.org, researching consumer product chemical hazards to promote chemical policy reform.
- Land Use, preserving farmland and natural areas, concentrate development where infrastructure exists, and reduce traffic congestion.
- Recycle Ann Arbor, a wholly-owned nonprofit subsidiary of the Ecology Center offering a variety of recycling and reuse services for households, businesses, and municipalities.
We rely on volunteers to help advance our mission through event support, community outreach, advocacy, and zero-waste initiatives.
