Detroit Literacy Coalition

Who We Are

Founded in 1986, DLC began as a research-driven community alliance committed to reducing illiteracy in Metro Detroit. What started as an initiative focused on adult literacy and G.E.D. completion quickly grew in response to conversations with parents, teachers-educators, and community leaders who expressed concern about children struggling with reading, writing, mathematics, financial literacy, comprehension, and language development.

What We Do

The mission of the Detroit Literacy Coalition (DLC) is to provide comprehensive, collaborative, lifelong literacy support to children and adults throughout Metro Detroit. The Detroit Literacy Coalition (DLC) envisions a future in which every participant has access to lifelong learning and literacy services. We support, promote, and ensure the availability and accessibility of relevant programs and resources to help participants succeed. We foster lifelong literacy skills that equip participants to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. We emphasize breaking down barriers through sustained and effective literacy education. We help participants excel in critical life domains so they may prosper personally, academically, professionally, and within their communities.
