Who We Are

Mission: To build a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Detroit is a faith-based nonprofit driving systemic change across Metro Detroit by preventing homelessness, fighting hunger, and transforming lives. Rooted in the vision of founder Frédéric Ozanam, we are part of a global network committed to building a more just world through personal relationships and direct service to those in need.

Since our founding in Detroit in 1884, we’ve offered compassionate support through home visits, food assistance, clothing, beds, utility aid, and more—meeting people where they are with empathy and dignity. Our local chapters, known as Conferences, are led by volunteers called Vincentians who serve their neighbors with humility, respect, and love.

Together, we aim not only to meet urgent needs but to break the cycle of poverty through personal connection and lasting impact.

What We Do

Our programs provide support ranging from utility, housing, and food assistance, to education and mentorship, and more. Each year, we also provide hundreds of qualifying children with the opportunity to attend our overnight summer camp on the shores of Lake Huron at no cost.

  • We build friendships with our neighbors, always lending an ear—and assistance when possible—with genuine compassion.
  • We restore our neighbors’ faith in their futures, exemplifying Gospel values in everything we do, while enriching spirituality among our members.
  • We make a positive impact through service in our community, connecting our neighbors with resources that address immediate needs and support their long-term growth and stability.
