Social Advocacy Coalition

Who We Are

Social Advocacy Coalition (formerly known as Students Against COVID) aims to bring students & allies together across the globe to create a common platform to share ideas, brainstorm together, & collaborate if possible during and after the Coronavirus Pandemic about various inequities. The movement aims to promote efficient and professional communication all the while encouraging others to champion scientifically-based facts & ideas, and building synergies. Volunteers consisted of 2000+ students and allies currently from 110+ nations who help drive the overall mission of the movement and partake in many  teams and initiatives within the movement. Please see more about us in our brochure here

What We Do

  • To further define Social Advocacy Coalition, this is a global grassroots movement with members from diverse backgrounds pursuing common goals. These goals consist of, but are not limited to, bridging communities worldwide, championing scientific principles, supporting essential workers, facilitating innovation and collaboration, fostering inclusivity, spreading credible information about COVID-19, and promoting social accountability. A short term immediate goal is to help flatten the curve of coronavirus 19 spread. Its long term goal is also to enable others worldwide to be in better positions to be leaders of positive change in their community. We further strive to shape the future direction of our movement to better meet the 17 global sustainability goals developed by the United Nations. We value students’ and allies’ voices, and we want to enable a culture that empowers their ability to make an impact across the globe long after this pandemic.
  • Current teams and initiatives within SAC include: ambassador program, artwork exhibition team, asylum seeker and refugee initiative, blogs and media team, child health and safety team, clinical resources development team, global health & social media team, health & fitness team, information technology team,  internal finance and social accountability team, interview team, live study group team, logistics team, mental health and wellness team, newsletter team, outreach team, financial awareness and health team, LinkedIn team, media relations team, academic conference task force, research initiative on mental health impact on medical students, general and clinical research team, research initiative on smartphone screen time use during COVID19, TikTok management team, translation team, USA: Metro-Detroit Volunteer Initiative Team, Video Editing Team, and Women’s Health and Safety Team.
  • For those interested, the Metro-Detroit Volunteer initiative aims to link existing organizations in the metro-Detroit region with volunteer opportunities! Please visit their Facebook group to learn more!
  • Within SAC,  we have had various internal initiatives within our teams, such as helping with PPE collection efforts, thank you cards to health care workers, food deliveries, research studies being made, mental health/wellness initiatives, child health anxiety awareness initiatives, connecting community members with volunteering opportunities in certain regions, etc.
  • We’ve also created alliances and collaborations with certain organizations with similar goals and efforts, with the overarching goal to empower young people’s and students’ voices in particular and more effectively address the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Essentially, SAC  not only acts as an incubator for COVID related projects but also has been formed as a multiplier of any good practice in the field. Except from promoting Students Against COVID’s teams and alliances, we always give the floor to other initiatives connecting them with SAC members in order to exchange ideas, receive feedback and seek for potential volunteers or collaborators. We take neither the credit nor the liability for each non SAC project that uses our social media platforms as a means of amplification.
  • We would love to have any student, young professional, or ally interested in joining our movement or supporting our movement do so! There are many ways to join here, such as joining as an internal member (form in bullet point #1), making an organizational alliance, submitting on our media/blog post, using our hashtag responsibly, posting on on our Facebook community page, etc.
